talk about timing, I was just wondering the same thing.......the repubs have a strong base among the military. Currently it is becoming apparent just how much they are losing there......so Bush would show no shame at dangling a carrot that is scheduled for the chopping block at these beleagured, scared and exhausted servicemembers. Tantamount to buying votes I guess (if you can rig em, buy em we can always cut them later).......btw, GB is doing the same thing to ITS soldiers in the area so I guess Bush and Blair really DO have the same values.

Does anybody remember that the GOP promised a massive military pay raise during the 2000 campaign.

My career Air Force freeping brother was already spending his raise (est about $3,000 per year) before the election.
