8. Vilsack's turn for introductions
This sounds like each candidate is going to get a significant amount of time to talk on their own. I think he said 20 minutes?

I'll be shocked if Dean doesn't rock the house today. This is his topic and it's in long form, which is his strongest speaking format.

13. Vilsack is hogging the spotlight and won't shut up
His introduction lasted more than 30 minutes, I swear!

Now he wants to check and see if they're still on schedule. Either he was hogging the spotlight or they were delaying for some reason. That introduction was one of the longest I've ever heard.

Heck, he was on for so long that some people are getting up to go to the bathroom during this brief pause.

KERRY NOW ON!

49. The Democratic Version is not Homeland Gestapo
if you actually looked through it, it didn't take away any civil liberties, it just was more funded for police departments, terror response training, etc. You see what I am getting at? Stuff that actually roots out terror. The Republicans added like 300 more things, most senators didn't have enough time to look through the repub version.

28. Dean steals from Wellstone,

so I don't think I'd be complaining about anyone stealing from Dean, if I were you. Stealing from a dead man is lower than saying something akin to what another candidate says on an issue all candidates are discussing.

30. Dean did not steal that from Wellstone
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 02:33 PM by khephra
A woman used the line to introduce Dean. Dean did not start using it himself. In a sense it was given to him by that woman.

Dean sure as hell didn't give Kerry any lines from his speeches to use.

But this just goes to show who has the better ideas. If Kerry is so desperate to use Dean's lines then he has fewer orginal ideas than I thought.

38. Nope, he's used it
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 02:40 PM by khephra
But an outsider to the campaign used it to introduce him and then he used it. Have qualms with him continuing to use it if you will. But that introduction opened the door for him to use it himself, imo.

What Kerry did here was much different.

He stole a line from one of his opponents in a primary.

Dean, if he "stole" the line, then he did it from someone that's he not running against and it doesn't involve policy, unlike Dean's line about "Either tax cuts or health care." which Kerry just used.

We can disagree on the stealing issue all night.

However, there's one thing that's hard for you to deny -- Kerry validated Dean's own stace and campaign meme as being superior by using it himself.

40. And didn't Wellstone get the line from Sheila Kuehl?
She's a California State Sen. who represents Santa Monica. That's where Dean said he heard it from first. And he gave her attribution until Wellstone people began writing him.

So then for a while he was saying, "As Paul Wellstone said--as Sheila Kuehl said when she endorsed me...I am Howard Dean, and I'm here to represent the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party."

But so much attribution and explanation tends to bog down the punchy, direct rhetoric he's famous for.

58. So does Sheila Kuehl claim that

Wellstone stole it from her? Or did she steal it from Wellstone? Or did Kuehl and Wellstone each come up with it on their own?

Whatever its origin and etiolgy, it is widely known as Wellstone's line and Dean is using it, and not always with attribution. Furthermore, it implies that Dean is politically like Wellstone, which he's not.

Like "Let's roll" and "fair and balanced." :eyes:

I think it's inevitable that people will steal other people's words, often without knowing it. I only object to Dean using a line that suggests he's ultra-progressive (like Wellstone) when he's not. After all, some of the Dems in Vermont left the Democartic Party and started a Progressive Party because Dean was so conservative. If Dean were progressive, his using the line wouldn't offend me.

Like if FOX really were "fair and balanced." they might have a basis for suing Al Franken!

72. The calls are now starting to swing in Dean's favor
Kucinich and Dean seem to be the big winners so far.
