Niagara power denies lightning strikes!
They deny that the problem originated there.

CNN reporting now.

2. odd
I thought it was odd that new reports were linking the power failure to a plant in niagra that was also the source of the blackout in the sixties. That would be somewhat improbable.

Some news reports talked about a SCADA system in place that might have not operated correctly. Hopefully time will tell what happened.

7. So where is followup on that fire at ConEd in Astoria?

My sister is in NJ. She could see the fire from where she is in NJ (she was evacuated from the Mall where she works). It had to be big and now that the focus is on Niagara falls. What happened to the report on that fire in NY?

4.  I heard the CNN report I didn't believe it

Behind this new hoopla with this so called sting and the missiles being smuggled in, which judging by the wording from the articles I have read even some main stream news outlets seem skeptical. So now behind that comes this major outage.

If it was terrorism it would be very difficult for them to admit it. Especially seeing as all their PR from the media has been in their effort to show America all they are doing to read intelligence correctly and their has not even been any warnings, so if this was terrorism do you understand how stupid they would look.

Do you have a link about this denial from Niagara Falls?

5. Wonder why the Canadian prime minister's office
made that assertion in the first place. Sounds like the kind of buck-passing Chimpy would be proud of.

6. Now the expert on CNN
says he doesn't know what happened. He says that they lost about 10% of the East, power-wise, but a lot was restored quickly. Northern NJ has had power restored. He says that some power plants that burn coal will take 4 hours to get online, nuclear plants half a day. Only gas plants can come online quickly.

He says the outage took about 9 seconds to spread from "wherever it started" to a donut around the Great Lakes.

If you find something in print you should post the link! Sorry, I don't mean to be bossy.

10. CNN reporting Canadian PM
blaming outage on fire at NYC Con Ed Plant.

My dad is in Queens and I spoke to him this afternoon, right after the power went out. He said there were plumes of black smoke coming from the plant all afternoon.

Then the media said that Con Ed said they were scrubbing the stacks. Guess they might have been BSing us?

11. Interesting than that there has been NO f/up coverage of that fire!!
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 07:52 PM by QuietStorm

wouldn't you say that was odd?

on edit: the conEd fire I mean. Strange that seems to have been dropped since CNN confirms it was lightening in Niagara Falls. We need confirmation of this stuff. Something doesn't feel right.

15. ah well that does serve as an explanation for the smoke

my sister said she saw it was very thick she commented because she could smell it. Okay then what is the back and forth stuff then between Niagara and ConEd. NOW they are repeating a disclaimer on terrorism the same disclaimer.

9. There was just a guy on NPR
and he's like "there hasn't been any lightning ANYWHERE around here" and they were hinting that they were getting really tired (already) of this being blamed on Canada

12. Canada saying it was a fire at Con Ed....Con Ed says no fire!
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 07:58 PM by Gloria
So what's going on?????

As I just posted, a guy from the "Reliability" group or whatever, said RULES WERE BROKEN.....

Just after the outage, Maria Hinojosa from CNN was down at the plant and said there was no one there, no crews at all. Which would jive with the statements I heard later that it's normal for the stacks to put out a lot of smoke when everything is shut down......

called my mother while I was on the phone with my mother explicitedly said she could see a big fire. I think network news confirmed there were no fires. They are lying. How can they do this?

22. From what I heard
from my dad, the smoke was coming off the plant all afternoon, way before the power went out.

However, a fire at the ConEd plant in Astoria shouldn't take down the whole grid.

23. Local weather here in NY says there was NO lightning
Just got power back here in the Hudson Valley of NY. Local weatherman said he checked all his maps and charts and there were no thunderstorms anywhere near the area. If no one knows what caused this damn thing, how do they know it wasn't caused by terrorists. Those of us who live near Indian Point are still suspicious that it might not be a diversionary cover.

24. hey Quietstorm?
You can't post a link if you saw it on television.

Keep that in mind. It does no good to lecture posters about links when it's something that was broadcast.

27. I mean it wasn't clear where the story originated
Edited on Thu Aug-14-03 08:43 PM by QuietStorm

I hadn'theard it on the news I had on so I thought it was word of mouth perhaps. And certainly you can not provide a link on that. I just wanted some clarification from some news source on the disparity in reports ABC did just report the disparity. Why do they not just say they do not know what caused the outage?

on edit? well see now I see you said CNN. I guess I don't believe anything anymore unless I hear or see it myself. sorry I didn't mean to sound like I was lecturing. It is just all the damn manipulation it makes one feel like they are in a kind of surreality, especially when around people that have no questions, they just believe everything they read. Not a care in the world.

25.  FINALLY ABC NEWS JUST REPORTED THE DISPARITY

FINALLY ABC NEWS JUST REPORTED THE DISPARITY in news reports. I just heard a commentator say that there was a report of the lightening, but Niagara falls states there was no lightening. They are fucking with us. I mean if they do not know the cause they do not have diddle around like this they just report they do not know the cause. WHY have they diverted our attention for the fire at ConEd and shifted it to Niagara falls only to find out Niagara Power says there was no lightening.

now comes ted Koppel...poor guy he has been asking pointed questions since we went into Iraq can't seem to get anyone to answer his questions though.
