More than a quarter of the Tennessee population under the age of 65 - about 1.4 million people - were without health insurance for at least part 2002 and 2003, according to a new study.

snip...

Tennessee was above the national average in the study, which found that one in three Americans (about 81.8 million) had not had health insurance during at least parts of those two years.

snip.....

Four out of five of the uninsured were in working families and a significant portion of the middle class was affected by the problem, according to the report. For example, one of four people with an income level between $55,980 and $74,640 did not have health insurance.

The report also found great disparities among races, with about 23.5 percent of non-Hispanic whites, 42.9 percent of non-Hispanic blacks and 59.5 percent of Hispanics without health coverage.
