That way Bush would have an able adversary in the primaries and who knows, might even lose to Clark or at least have a poor showing. What happens after that is anyone's guess.
Is that when it came down to a cat fight in the National Convention, Bush will win. Why? Because the wingnut evangelicals and the rabid right wingers would all vote for Bush. Clark is far too progressive for all but the most moderate of Republicans.
You can't win the Republican nomination without at least paying lipservice to the pathologies of the right in the Republican Party. Classic case of they don't have enough clout to just elect Pat Robertson but they do have enough to make sure anyone else DOESN'T get elected if they don't bow and scrape.
I don't have statistical info on this, but it seems to me that the rightwingnuts don't make up the clear majority of the Republican party. I see moderate Republicans wanting a choice.
