What was the deal with the 9/11 put options?
Question: What is a put option with a stock? Is that the same as shorting it?

I remember that someone said that a lot of investors either put or shorted the stocks of American and United Airlines. I heard that they also put and shorted the stocks of insurance companies?

Did those investors pick up their profits? And the did the SEC ever look into it?

yes, I think, puts are shorting

no it was NOT a bunch of investors

Nobody yet knows who it was

SEC? You must be kidding.

Why did the media drop the story?

On edit: I believe no investor stepped forward to claim profits

also Deutch(sp?) Bank connection for the placing of orders

Also promis type software for realtime stock monitoring as an antiterra stratagem

2. The reason I asked was because of a thread started
about a company in the UK that deals with electrical emergencies whose stock spiked right before the outage.

4. I thought that was why you asked.
I didn't expect an answer to my question about the media

it was more rhetorical.

What non-conspiracy theories do you have for any of this?

3. It's sort-of like shorting
You get the right, but not the obligation, to sell shares of the underlying stock at a specified price.

You pay a premium to purchase the option, but it can pay off handsomely if the stock price drops signficantly. OTOH, if the price rises, you lose nothing more than the cost of the option (which would not be the case if you had actually shorted the stock).
