Which one of the freedoms that has been lost to the Patriot Act
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 07:23 PM by brigadoon
are you most concerned about?

The one that concerns me most is the right to due process. I am probably the last person to have to worry about it but it bothers me because I feel anyone can be a victim of mistaken identity.

1. You're very correct
about mistaken identity concerns. I remember years ago when we bought our first house some bogus information showed up on our credit report, ostensibly on my husband. Apparently there was someone with the same name from a town a few miles south of where he grew up who was a deadbeat dad and owned back child support. Fortunately, it was an easy thing to straighten out, but in today's political climate it could mean some serious problems. I've heard of people who are virtually unable to fly anymore because their names are similar to someone on some "watch" list.

2. Does it concern you that there are more replys to threads on
"Anti-south" or jokes than there are to the real concerns that we need to deal with in this forum?

3. It Bloody Should! But.....
I expect this thread to sink like all the others on this board that point out real concerns.

I fear a lot of these people will still be jabbering about irrellevencies as their last freedoms disappear.

9. By the way, one of the things I like most about DU is that it demonstrates
the emerging global community that is our only salvation. I am heartened to have the input of people who bring a different perspective.

7. I guess the truth is that it all scares the hell out of me.
I was reading the first chapter of Will Pitt's book "The Greatest Sedition is Silence" about the graduates at Ohio State who wanted to silently demonstrate against Bush when he spoke at their Graduation ceremony. The crowd control reminded me of old news reels of the Reich.

We are in serious trouble here.

8. It is not one particular thing in the act that is the most troubling
I just have a generalized fear now that hangs over me.

I watch what I say - What I do - Where I go - Who I see --

It is a sick sad thing

We must fight the rightwing monsters like the future is at stake.

IT IS !!!

They will destroy us all if we do not stop them.

10. due process covers a lot, but ...
Maybe we shouldn't spend energy trying to figure out which portion of the shredded Bill of Rights gets the most points. I suggest that we simply oppose this poisonous Act. I cannot even bring myself to call it a law without feeling dirty.

11. Good point
Elect the right people, get behind the fight, oppose them in the courts, oppose them in the public. Guess I'd better go back and read some history!
