U.S. Casualties

8/16/2003

As of Friday, 268 U.S. soldiers have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq, according to the military.

The British government has reported 45 deaths.

On or since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 130 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to the latest military figures.

No new deaths were reported.

The latest identifications, ac cording to the Department of Defense and the Iowa National Guard:


Army Pfc. Timothy R. Brown, Jr., 21, Conway, Pa.; died Aug. 12 in Taji, Iraq; injured by an explosive device while in a convoy; assigned to D Company, 519th Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Army Sgt. Taft V. Williams, 29, New Orleans; died Aug. 12 near Ar Ramadi, Iraq; injured by an explosive device while in a convoy; assigned to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colo.

Army Sgt. Steven W. White, 29, Fruitvale, Texas; died Aug. 13 in Tikrit, Iraq; injured when his M113 armored personnel carrier hit an anti-tank mine; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Army Pfc. David Kirchhoff, 31, Anamosa, Iowa; died Aug. 14 after suffering heat stroke Aug. 9 in Iraq; assigned to the Iowa Guard's 2168th Transportation Company, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

1. They're all just kids
At least from my age persepctive. Much too young to go--still too much for them to see and do.

May Dumbo burn in hell for his murders.

2. I wonder why the numbers don't match.
The 130 number appears accurate, but the 268 number should be 276. Why the difference? Aren't they counting deaths outside of Iraq?
