Hey Diebold: With no paper trail, how do we recount the votes?
You can't, otherwise we would be able to recount Georgia. Of course, when the Repukes steal it, they will make sure to win by more than 1%, well beyond the recount cut-off margin.

This clinches the argument for a Voter-verified paper trail.

They win by enough so as not to draw automatic recounts and by not too much so not as to leave the public wondering.

2. And spread it over bunches of machines/precincts/counties
and it doesn't even look suspicious at all.

UNLESS it goes widely against pre-election polling:

or renders Voter News Service results too far off to be used, which appparently still doesn't raise (enough) suspicions.
