monitor and close down these threads that seem to be bashing i.e. anti-southern, Bush is gay, Rush is Gay because they do not serve the purpose of DU.

I feel it is important to keep members who bring perspectives and experiences from all over the country. It is what makes our interaction viable.

I don't mind a little contention as long as it's kept civil and appropriate. I think the mods do a pretty good job of stopping the flaming while allowing legitimate argument.

I believe much of what you are commenting upon was the intent of the experimental rules tried out last weekend.

I think they can be constructive at times. As for my southern thread, I asked them to lock it and they didn't. It would be nice if we could automatically have a thread locked that we regretted starting.

Why the rush/bush is gay threads are a problem is beyond me. I ignore them just like I ignore the pointless candidate-bashing threads.

Imagine, for a moment, that there is an outbreak of copycat threads claiming that every loathsome, vicious political reactionary you can think of is secretly Jewish.

Might Jews have reason to find that offensive? I would say so.

I don't think a good debate is unhealthy. We have some serious misinformation problems down here. The problem is, those Southerners (like me) who have found our way to DU are already converts to the progressive cause. However, our relatives and friends, who are fed pablum by Fox, Rush and Hannity, as well as our ignorant state representatives, county commissioners and others, are still good people, and it hurts to have others say things you KNOW are true (to some degree). In other words, I can say bad things about my brother, but YOU'D better not!

lol..anyway, there are treasures aplenty down here...apple butter, mountains, rivers and streams, neighbors helping each other, sitting on the porch, and sweet tea. Come set on my front porch and catch the view of Buffalo Mountain, while a thunderstorm rumbles across the sky...:) Those of us here at DU will be needed in the near future to help out folks down here...

I really want people to stop generalizing about everything, though. All Republicans aren't evil, all southerners aren't racist, all democrats aren't gay (not that there's anything WRONG with that), and all university presidents don't spend $97,000.00 on a bedroom closet.

It was not constructive. We may lose good people because of it.

It works! The problem being that sometimes what offends or upsets us isn't in direct violation of DU rules, and the Mods have to use their best judgement on how to enforce them.

The only things I've ever seen deleted were posts involving libel, copyright infringement, or sometimes outright heavy profanity.

It's clear that the Mod's here are perefectly happy to let the South-bashing go on, and in fact go on in a major, repeated way.

They're also perfectly content to have legitimate news-related threads get buried by the South bashing.
