Would someone please explain the Civil War revival on DU?!
Um, I've been seeing thread after thread Southerners vs Northerners. What in the H*** brought this on and WHY for pity's sake?

Shoot, for weeks now I've been sitting here in my Yankee State feeling sorry for the crap the Texan Democrats are having to go through, and the next thing I know we're rightback at it. I'm half expecting to see a new Seccession movement!

1. It's easy
Someone here has cornered the market on pewter civil war chess sets, and is preparing to spam us all until we buy them.

ACT NOW and get this beautiful Franklin Mint special edition angel doll!

2. Politically motivated, perhaps?
I wasn't involved in any of the weekend southerner bashings, but I do have a theory that the motivation behind the attack is to eliminate the conservative southern candidate from the party ticket.

3. Listen, honey child, the correct name is the War of Northern Aggression.
My thoughts are that people just don't know where to go with their anger and frustration and instead of putting it where it can help us, by fighting and defeating baby bush and the gang, they attack those closest, their fellow DUers.

13. That is not the correct name
It is more accurately called "The Glorious War to Defeat the Southern Traitors"

18. In the 80's there was a push to say the war was all about economic
differences. I remember my father saying just what you did. "I thought the war was about abolishing slavery." Unforunately the person that was enslaved to "run" the economy of the south fueled that economy, so both are right. My daughter in High School in the late 80's had a classmate say that slavery had its good points. (The people were taken care of, etc. HE failed to note that they were taking care of themselves just fine before they were enslaved and brought to this country and sold for other's profit.) She was so MAD, I thought I was going to have to find her another school. (It was a private school.) I'll bet I know what party that now 30 year old, white male votes for and probably who his favorite radio and tv talk show hosts are also.

4. Unite South and North US
I have my prejudices, I was raised as such. They never change until I see it for myself.

Socialists, Liberals and Democrats from EVERYWHERE need to unite.

6. We all need to unite
southerners, northerners, black, white, Asian, hispanic, jews, christian and atheist, gay and straight -- we all need to be united -- so we can beat up on the Indians.

Sorry -- very old joke - I couldn't resist -- I'm ashamed of myself.

9. D.U. likes shooting itself in the foot?
This board supposedly welcomes anyone interested in ousting Bush, but threads like this certainly don't welcome southerners and I am sure have chased more than a few off.

They really should be deleted as soon as they start, or locked, just like Skinner locked all the feminist threads last week with the explanation that we all need a rest from the subject and from flaming each other. I just dig my heels in a little deeper when it comes to stuff like this, wanting to be the southern white trash hemorhoid the pseudo-intellectuals can't chase out of here. Sadly, it is just an immature world-view that should not be allowed to fester on here. But on the other hand, controversy sells and when people get p.o.d and start flaming each other it pumps up the number of messages beside each forum in the lobby.

I don't participate in these threads unless I am totally bored and have nothing else to do because it is a waste of energy that could be better put to use helping the Democratic party instead of hurting it.

11. There was a post a long time ago
I don't know when but it seems like someone is always responding to a past thread. There will be one thread that will include the south-north battle and than someone will start a new thread on it because the other one has gotten so long and they want to make their views well known. Also, this thread could even turn into a south-north battle. It seems like many of them start off pretty innocent and turn into a big fight.

If it makes sense, don't do it. If it divides us and we get to eat each other, by all means do it.

20. It's still being fought.
Remember historian Barbara Harris's comments in Ken Burns "The Civil War?":

"Without emancipation, the war was nothing but meaningless carnage. It required a war to make the Constitution that of a real, united nation. And it's still being fought. The Civil War is not over as long as some are living in houses and others on the street. If some citizens live in houses and some live on the streets, then the Civil War is still being fought and, regrettably, it can still be lost."

Clearly, this notion plays out very strongly in our current political climate.

23. A Dog On a Tether Can Only Bark
We Democrats are hard pressed to win a presidential election when we have to spot the opposition a 10-state advantage right at the outset. We're like a dog on a tether; all we can do is bark about it. Every time we think we've got something going, we have to keep those 10 states in mind, and like a tether, it yanks us back to political reality.

Today's New York Times has a story that suggests the Solid South may be developing some cracks, but that's a man-bites-dog story. The South isn't in play, and everybody knows it. Bush doesn't even have to campaign there, despite reports that Southerners are concerned about the economy. This won't translate into a Democratic majority in any Southern state. What can you say about people like that? Their behavior defies logic.

... the Republican wall of support here is indeed showing cracks, reflecting economic trends that Democrats say make Mr. Bush vulnerable. Since the president took office, more than 2.5 million jobs have been lost across the country, a downturn that administration officials contend is now turning around.
