State has its own potential actor/politician

(snip)

New Jersey has Bruce Willis, the action movie star and part-time rock 'n' roller. Willis is a Republican and, with Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, a partner in the Planet Hollywood theme restaurant chain.

Jeremy Jedynak, chairman of the New Jersey Young Republican Federation, launched draftbrucewillis.com on Tuesday. The Web site says, "Republicans have lost the last two statewide elections in New Jersey. If California is an example of what is possible, Bruce might be our guy to change that."

Though Willis does not live in New Jersey, he grew up in Salem County and attended Montclair State University.

According to internal polls on Jedynak's Web site, about two-thirds of visitors to the site support the recall of Gov. James E. McGreevey. Willis would win an election against McGreevey with 72.7 percent of the vote, if it was up to Web site visitors.

But to hold a recall election in New Jersey, McGreevey opponents would need to collect 1.16 million signatures on a petition. State law requires 25 percent of the people who voted in November 2002 to sign on. California recallers collected 1.3 million signatures, but needed only 897,158, or 12 percent of the number of votes cast for governor in 2002, to force the election scheduled for Oct. 7.

Comment: Recall is a little tougher in NJ. On shortwave, the Canadian show Media Zone explained CA's predicament better than you'd here it discussed in CA! (Including the Jarvis Prop. 13, destruction of public education, and the whole "iniatiative" which caters to special interests and the wealthy with an axe to grind, NOT the average voter--which has left the state with single issues like "3 strikes" meaning bucks wasted on expensive prisons for 3 time pot smokers at the expense of the higher education system! But I digress....) And, they speculated on other states (like NJ) in the same mess and how undemocratic this recall crap is, esp. in CA....

1. as new jerseyan
Bruce willis wouldn't stand a chance here...

I'm not a fan of mcgreevy, he's doing an excellent job of raping my school by trying to merge it with rutgers to create the new state university of NJ which will be named "Rutgers" rather than keeping NJIT and Rutgers seperate. However, most of the problems here are bush/whitman related.

Then there's the usual vacation on taxpayer's money, but most career politicians try that, and its already been forgotten here by all but the repukes....

Then there's the state legislature, which has a Dem/green majority

3. I haven't forgotten the trip
And I don't think that I am the only non-republican who remembers it. I loathe McGreevey but I wouldn't vote for Willis over him. It is basically impossible to get a recall done in New Jersey, so it will never happen. McGreevey has had a lot more ethical problems than just the vacation, including his other vacation to Puerto Rico and his numerous appointments of some questionable people. I also remember his deal with the NRA. I don't like him and most people don't but I doubt that Willis could win.

4. You've got to make sure that a recall never occurs!
That means if someone gets the papers out then you must aggressivly fight them Reich and Right!!! You can't shrug them off like Gray Davis did. If you do then you will have a SERIOUS problem!!!

7. It won't happen
They would need 25% of the total number of last year's voters to sign the petition. They would never get that. I wouldn't be too sad to see McGreevey go but I'm opposed to recalls and would be terrified that some how Schundler would win. I'm just hoping for a primary in 2005 to oust McGreevey.

2. America is collapsing
in their hubris, Americans can't tell fantasy from reality, and, in fact, don't seem to care about the distinction.

5. Never happen here.
Joisey's pretty well recall-proof, but even if it could happen, there's no way in hell this state would go for Willis-- even against McGreevey.

I'm not sure why (it might have something to do with the extraordinarily high percentages of engineers, scientists, and history professors) but identifying yourself as EITHER a liberal or conservative pretty much guarantees you don't get a statewide office here.

6. Are the Republicans getting desperate?
Is their only salvation nominating actors to play politicians?

I think they that their survival as a species means taking over and maintaining control in as many state races as possible, by whatever means necessary. Apparently, they can't wait for the next election cycle.....very odd.

10. And from the article...
Doherty... The the asshole who called Corzine a communist...

isn't he the prick who got Marge Roukema bounced out of her seat?

He's got a pretty solid Republican seat, thanks to the wingnuts up there and too many Republicans who just vote the line.

It's an uphill battle, and the challenger ain't all that swift or funded, but if Doherty keeps calling the retired chairman of an investment bank a communist, he may just have a shot. Even Republicans wake up once in a while.

9. I like Bruce Willis
especially liked him in the movie "Unbreakable", I don't have a problem with actors getting into politics or anybody for that matter.

11. Tom Cruise lived in Glen Ridge, let's run him too!
Edited on Mon Aug-18-03 09:51 PM by tjdee
Ah yes, the Tom Cruise/Bruce Willis governor rummmmbbbblllleeee....

Why don't we recall all the Democratic governors, and seek to replace them with Republican actors?

Governor Bo Derek! Governor Norm Coleman! Governor Kelsey Grammar!

You know, I have no problem with actors getting into politics if they feel led to do so, but I hope this doesn't become the GOP tactic.

And, the owner of the website...Willis doesn't even LIVE in New Jersey! Now they're against residency requirements too?

*tjdee runs screaming from the room*
