Has any one heard about Oprah supporting Schwarzenegger?
I recieved an email from "Californianaginistherecall" and there is word that she may endorse his for Governor. I don't watch her show, but she could sway her viewer very easily with her endorsement. Anybody heard anything?

5. This could be true. She and Maria are fast friends from long ago.

Early TV career days and they visit each others homes, etc. from what I hear.

There are people who like him who are repubs and dems who will support him no matter where he stands.

Oprah will do what she wants to do and will probably not be swayed by any public pressure.

You would think so wouldnt you?
I hope she doesnt do something so short-sighted.

If Oprah does, then it will reflect alot about Oprahs actions versus her words, that essentially Oprah cares more about being included in an A Kennedy/blue blood crowd, than she does about a very (racist in case she has forgotten) Republican party seizing the governorship because of course they can't win on the issues or even fairly.

I hope Oprah has not become so shallow or disconnected from reality, and even so disconnected from her roots as a human being and an African American. I didnt think she had. Supporting Arnold because she is friends with Maria, negates all that Oprah has spoken up about and supposedly has stood for.

8. She may like him personally, just like Teddy Kennedy.
Edited on Mon Aug-18-03 06:51 PM by tjdee
I think this is just a rumor.

She's MARIA'S friend, not Arnold's. I'm sure they're friendly enough, but I've not seen any evidence that she adores him at all.

I'd be very surprised if she got involved.

9. Lives in Chicago but she has property
around Santa Barbara. Since she has property here maybe she feels she has a vested interest in who is Governor. I like Oprah and hope she doesn't endorse that no-nothing Arnie, if she does she is going on my sh*t list.

2. I have seen Maria Shriver on Oprah
She and Oprah are old friends from when they started out in tv news. So it's possible. Though I kind of doubt it.

3. Everyone at DU should write her
and ask her not to meddle in California politics if she has the intention of doing so.

7. I think she was in their wedding.
Edited on Mon Aug-18-03 06:40 PM by tjdee
They worked together at a tv station a LONG time ago, when both were nobodies. They became good friends.

On edit:
She wasn't a bridesmaid, but she did do a reading (Browning's "How do I love Thee?" if you're interested).

That doesn't mean she's going to endorse Arnold, though. If she did, I'd lose some respect for her. I don't think she'll get involved.

11. heard earlier on some show....
That Ar-nuld was taking some flak for not getting out there and facing the music -- answering media questions, stating positions, etc. -- and that he might go on Oprah to answer those concerns. In other words, a softball interview in a friendly setting.
Beyond that, I'm not sure about Oprah "endorsing" him -- although I've been disappointed before, and try not to place too much faith in so-called principled people.

13. To be fair
she had both candidates on and didn't endorse either. I really don't see her endorsing a candidate.

Also, she certainly doesn't support Bush. She refused to be used as a pawn in their planned Afghanistan tour and did a very good job on some of the issues leading up to the Iraqi invasion. She covered some of the same issues we covered here and you could tell it was a revelation for many in her audience.

14. yes, and he kissed her
Remember what a big deal they made out of that, like he was some freakin' deity or something? Al Gore was also on, but all the pundits just oohed and aahed over what a great impression Bush made. Then the line they kept repeating over and over -- as they are wont to do -- was "the road to the White House runs through Oprah's show."
Real original.
