About a decade ago, I worked in a newsroom that was strictly "business." The powers-that-be decided to promote a young person to news editor, a big-time gatekeeper and a position of authority over many, IMO, more qualified candidates (not me, I was the old mantern).

One night I was surprised to hear the new news editor gasp: "Tet. Tet. What's with all this 'Tet'?" in response to a computer screen filled with AP wire stories about the 25th anniversary of the Vietnamese New Year offensive that showed America, once and for all, that the war in southeast Asia was unwinnable.

The young editor had never heard about the Tet Offensive. Yet this person would help determine what news thousands of people would see and read I the daily newspaper. I got my resume together the next day.
