HOORAY for fake diamonds....
Maybe the Africans will stop fighting amongst themselves for control of the diamond resources. This will be a big blow to Pat Robertson and his ilk who are making a mint off of African diamonds. Maybe the natives will turn to more productive things like growing food, education, and building their infrastructure and using foreign aid for good instead of for keeping ruthless dictators in power.

7. These are artificially-created real diamonds
Not fakes at all, but the genuine article -- only born in a laboratory. That's what's different.

4. You think J Lo or Elizabeth Taylor

would ever be caught dead in a cubic zirconia? As long as wealthy, mostly American and European, people are willing to spend the money and enough people are fooled by the DeBeer's commercials into thinking diamonds=love there will always be a market for the real thing. The issue isn't as simple as natives need to turn to more productive activities. Diamonds bring a lot of money into many poverty stricken nations. As long as there is a demand and the people aren't receiving adequate foreign aid there will continue to be fighting over the control of diamonds

5. I literally cried when I first read about blood diamonds
It boggles my mind that war can be created over the lust of oil and children could be forced into slavery for sparkly rocks. I just don't get it.

8. Didn't they find a shitload of diamonds in Siberia recently?
Basically, proving that the rarity of diamonds is a bunch of hooey? Which would mean that millions of people where brutally murdered over rocks that are as common as shale. Can you imagine?

10. Hardly common as shale, but tightly controlled
Whenever there is a significant find, DeBeers buys them up and keeps the price of diamonds artificially high.

Too tired to google you a source, but I know it is true.

11. If all the effort exerted of extracting worthless diamonds ...
... were used to constructively better Africa, they would not be 100 years behind the rest of the world.
Never understood the "value" of diamonds. Can eat them, some industial uses and not nearly as pretty as rubys. Things that make you go hummmm.
