well, folks . . . looks like 2012 is IT . . .
this website speculates that 2012 will mark a "convergence of eschatalogical information" that will change everything about the world and our place in it . . . fascinating reading requiring either tinfoil hats or hipboots, possibly both . . . leave yourself plenty of time to browse . . . :)

1. Steep, uphill climb to 2012 - an overview
This report gives a broad picture, in political context:

Most of the traditional elders I have spoken with -- and that's quite a large number -- have a similar view.

28. Same with those of mine
Most of the Wiccan/Pagan elders I've talked with, as well as my friends and colleagues that are into that kind of thing, know that SOMETHING BIG is going to happen then, just no idea what. I have my own theories.

7. I always figured that the Mayan calendar ending in 2012
not because if was the end of the world, but because the guy doing the calendar either got bored or died.
Kinda like the scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
"It looks hopless for our brave heros, when suddenly the cartoonist dies of a massive coronary."
They would be laughing their butts off if they know all the fear and speculation they created.

18. There are 17 Mayan calendars, and they chart different spans
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 11:48 AM by SpiralHawk
of time. The particular calendar that is in question is the Tzolkin, which covers a span of 26,000 years (the time it takes our Sun and planet Earth to make a full circle around the heart of our neighborhood galaxy: the Milky Way.

Are they accurate in a prophetic sense? That point is probably endlessly arguable.

Are they accurate in a scientific sense? Without a doubt. They are far more precise and accurate that the Gregorian calendar, which the dominant techno-industrial cultures of the world now use. Just google the themes of Mayan calendars and how they have stood up to mathematical and astronomical examination. Pretty interesting.

For the record, the Traditional Keepers of the Tzolkin say that the Fourth World (by their reckoning) ends at Winter Solstice in the year 2012. If we human beings act in a wise and respectful manner, that date will also mark the start of the Fifth World (Itza Age for the Maya; the Age of Flowers in other native cosmologies).

By way of context, it may be helpful to note that according to the Daykeepers, the Third World was the epoch of human history that other cultures around the world (well over 100 of them) remember as the Atlantean Epoch. The element water brought the Third World to an end, they say, and gave us the Great Flood and Noah and all the other boat people who landed in various places on Earth and initiated the Fourth World. The Hopi say they survived the flood by going underground into a sealed cave until the waters receded.

Not just Water but all the other elements are at work this time, with an emphasis on Fire -- and a transition to a newly awakened element: Ether.

Catch you later somewhere in the DU EtherNet.

20. Since the Mayan culture is less than, say 4000 years old
then we should have another 22,000 years to go, right?

And I learned of two calendars when I had my Maya studies and wasn't told of others. Got links or references? I'd like to read about them.

32. Try the link at the top of this thread, Sybylla
It is one of the most comprehensive collections of links -- and you can find pretty much anything that has been written about the Mayan Calendars and the year 2012. The quality of the material varys widely.

6. Hey, That's Terence McKenna's Theory!
He was my favorite pseudo scientist. I have never read anyone who could use such a wide range of insights in so many different fields and put them together in such an imaginitive and bizarre way. He's famous for his writings on hallucinogenics -- he found convincing (to me) evidence of religious drug use in a variety of ancient cultures.

McKenna's time wave has to do with the "introduction of novelty into history". McKenna started with the I Ching, which is composed of 64 stanzas. Each one can be represented as a six-digit binary number (six sticks are read, each one of which can have two values).

McKenna then used some kind of recursive function he got from fractal geometry and expanded the I Ching into a huge irregular function. He then overlaid this function on a historical timeline and claimed it corresponded to the introduction of novelty into history. The function collapsed to zero at the end of 2012, which McKenna referred to as the eschaton. (It also corresponded to the end of the Mayan calendar, which was probably deliberate.) McKenna was very cagey about the meaning of the eschaton, but to him it meant that novelty expanded to infinity and resulted in the end of history as we know it.

Wild stuff. Looks like it's been picked up by the usual gang, including Christian fundamentalists trying to relate it to the apocolypse.

12. I Love Terence McKenna

a perfect mixture of Irish blarney and creative hippy madness.

In one of his books, he was trekking in the Amazon looking for traditional hallucinogenic brews, and developed this insane theory about how the drugs work. It involved the atomic orbits in the molecules vibrating in upper dimensions and opening up conciousness to these dimensions, or something like that. It was much more involved than that, and I was very impressed that he had learned all this stuff and was able to put it together like this.

After he got back to the states, McKenna looked up a leading academic in a related area, made an appointment, and explained his entire theory in great detail. He ended by saying: "So, do think I'm correct, or could I be mistaken?"

The academic looked at him wearily and simply said: "Mr. McKenna, you are not even mistaken." He was crushed.

is Adrian Gilbert. He'll be talking about Mayan prophecies, Stargate and secret chambers in the pyramids of Giza. (I don't know what Stargate is.)

And tomorrow night, Sean David Morton will be on with predictions.

So, any night owls out there can listen in. :-)

27. I do believe we are at the end of the world as we know it...
it is just a gut feeling... but I think that in the next decade we will see more changes than in the last century. We are probably near the breaking point: Either we humans take a huge leap forward, or we disappear.
