Yes we at DU, and a pretty significant percentage of Americans, know that this idea is under assault but your average Dem/Liberal/Independant probably thinks 10 Commandment people are simply crazy and the Courts will make certain that they're just an anomoly.
Plus, believe it or not, there are PAID anti-Abortion/Anti-Atheist/Pro-Ten Commandment teams that travel America protesting all sorts of places.
How do I know this? I've met them, yep.
Here, at the "Godless March" in DC:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2002/11/01/MN215082.DTLThere were around 2,500-3,500 people that attended the first of it's kind "protest".
Generally speaking it was an "out of Towner" event with most coming from other states. The American Secular Humanists group played a big role as did American Atheists. That said there were several Liberal Christians there that were simply trying to express some solidarity against the Ashcroft Religious Fascist.
It was a mixed bag...Except for 40-60 anti-Godless March protestors. They arrived early, armed with well worn signs depicting Hell and burning corpses, and were fairly well behaved throughout the day (OK, at one point the horsey cops had to take away a bullhorn, sorry). I struck up a conversation with several of them and asked them why they were there. To protest the godless heathens! Sure I said, but where are you from? South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, et cetera. I asked them if them protested abortion clinics. Yes they did. Did they travel from event to event "protesting"? YES. For Jesus of course...
My guess? Many of the Alabama "protestors" are people that I've had a coffee with.
