Who was Willie Horton?
I hear the name all the time but I have no clue who he was except that he had something to do with Dukakis's defeat.

1. Bush Sr.
Used a parolee in Mass. to use the fear factor against Dukakis.

IMHO Willie Horton was the 1988 Republican Man of the Year.

3. Willie Horton
Played left field for the Tigers, Cleveland, Texas and Seattle from about 1965-80. Right-handed hitter with above average power, but never could hit a good curveball. Threw out a non-sliding Lou Brock at the plate in the fifth game of the 1968 World Series, which turned the whole Series around (Tigs won in seven games).
He's got a statue at Comerica Park in Detroit.
John
Interesting fact about those statues: They put the one of notorious racist Ty Cobb right between that of Willie (black guy) and Hank Greenberg (Jewish guy). I'm sure the old cracker is spinning in his grave over that.

4. The Dailyhowler has the best take on it(him), IMO.

It's a good example of how the rw and press out and out lied about Gore's "lies" or in this example, just make shit up. This is the kind of crap Gore was up against.

5. Dukakis parolled Willy Horton, who went on to brutalize and rape
Edited on Wed Aug-27-03 01:06 AM by amen1234
a woman...Willy was a BIG ugly Black Man...and that was an important point in the campaign commercial for George Bush1....

The commercial implied that if you elected Dukakis....then, YOUR wife (girlfriend or sister or YOU) was going to be raped and brutalized by BIG ugly Black men just like Willy (who they showed in the commercial)....the commercial was a prelude to the type of racism used by George Bush2...they play race, and they play it to their advantage...today, bush2 uses Muslims to create a fear in Americans...lying is a bush family trait, so is dirty politics...the Willy Horton commercial was the dirtiest....it was followed through with a question during the debates...something like "well, Governor Dukakis, how would you feel if Willy Horton did that to YOUR wife???"....real dirty...and sealed the message....the whole thing was spun spun spun real dirty, and real nasty...just a little bit of truth, and a lot of "suggestion" and play on "fear"....

not certain about the actual details of the brutal assault...not certain about the parole either (or maybe it was a furlough), but there was much debate about that...since it was a fairly routing parole, recommended by the Board...seems there was little indication that Willy would go ahead with such violence...and it wasn't like Dukakis was letting out violent criminals all the time, because he wasn't (but bush1 implied that)...and critically, the parolee was BLACK...which added the race card very effectively....and the commercial made the BLACK race the main fear factor to gain votes....the votes of white people...it was real nasty politics...the worst kind...

it was really nasty to all Black prisoners, because after Willy Horton commercial...all politicians lived in fear that they might parole someone and it would come back to haunt their career later...so the bush2 approach became much more popular...no parole, just kill them all....

6. From my memory

1) Willie Horton was a convicted murderer serving life without parole. He was let out of prison on a weekend pass. While out of prison he raped a woman and violently assaulted (murdered?) her boyfriend.

2) The Bush I campaign commercial showed a turnstile and about five guys (4 white, one black) going around in a circle, while the overvoice talked of letting prisoners out on weekend passes, some of whom committed crimes while they were out. The name Willie Horton was never used in the ad, nor was his picture.

3) Before Bush ever had a thing to say about Willie Horton, the issue was used against Dukakis by Al Gore in the primaries during a debate. He questioned why you would let out a murderer who was serving life without parole.

4) There was also an issue group ad that did use Horton's picture. There was quite an outcry when that came on, and it was quickly taken off the air.

5) I think the crude question in the debates others have referred to was by Bernard Shaw, when he asked Dukakis since you're against the death penalty, how would you feel if your own wife was raped and murdered? He also asked Bush, if he felt okay dying in office with Dan Quayle waiting to take over. It was a rough debate for Bernie.

7. Your memory is flat out wrong
totally, completely, and utterly wrong in relation to Gore. Gore didn't use the name of Willy Horton and in point of fact told about a case that was different from Horton. I know that due to reading the following www.dailyhowler.com

Gore talked about people being let out and committing murder when out. Horton raped but didn't murder when out. You are gold plated, 24 carat wrong.
