Poll question: Are You A Hawk, Owl, Or Dove?
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 01:36 AM by khephra
I'd write definitions, but I was finding that it was hard to write unbiased ones.

So please feel free to give your definitions of the group you picked and those you didn't pick.

1. Dove
Only peace can bring peace. Wars will never bring peace. John Kennedy our greatest American president said if we don't end wars was will end us.

9. Moongod below has a pretty good unbiased definiton
Of course, the whole situation of War to Peace is on a continuum, so not many people fit into each group in every case. I just saw the earlier thread about people supporting the war, and I became curious as to what the spread of views were here on the use of force.

hawk= war no matter what
owl= hell if I know
dove= generally try to oppose wars but will support just ones
I consider myself a dove but I would support WWII duh and would enlist if I could.

5. re: definitions, how are these? (extreme positions for Hawks & Doves)
Hawk: Pro-war. Anywhere, anytime, let's get it on. Might makes right.

Owl: Let's see the facts, then I'll decide if the particular war that you're proposing is justified.

Dove: There is never a good reason for war, ever.

If you meant something else feel free to correct me, Khephra :-)

10. See what I mean though?
It's really hard to give definitons for these without really tipping your hand as to what you feel you are.

I guess this is just a "how do you see yourself?" poll, as many of us will disagree as to what fits in what camp.

if our troops are deployed for any reason other than defense or purely to help the population of a country, it is not in my name.

11. I voted Dove, but I'd say I'm actually somewhere between Dove and owl.
For example, I agree that WWII was something worth getting into.

17. A Dove, unless cornered, then I morph into an Owl...
But it takes a lot to get me there. Negotiation should never be allowed to break down. After WWII, I'm hard-pressed to think of a fight that was worth starting or getting into, let alone not immoral on some grounds.

We need to think beyond war.

but there are exceptions to the rule, for instance Humantarian purposes. that does not mean a free-for-all though, we must follow the rule of law and not lose our humanity in the process.

21. Dove.
or somewhere between dove and hawk. I'll never attack. I'll mount a strong defense if attacked. Any defensive action ends the instant the aggressor backs down.

Theodore Roszak's quote come to my mind,
"People try nonviolence for a week, and when it 'doesn't work', they go back to violence, which hasn't worked for centuries."

and when to stay the hell out of it. If we had spent all of this damn money on alternative fuel technology we could just send the whole middle east a nice break up card and call it good.

28. Owl...
I don't want the U.S. to run around the world fighting everyone by itself like a Hawk. However, I also don't want us to sit back and do nothing if a threat is materializing or the rest of the world is taking action. I also think when we do use force it should be proportional, targetted, and in league with other nations.
