Could someone please explain this cartoon to me?

It seems to me that he is saying that the children of soldiers stationed in Iraq who want their parents to come home should shut up because some children lost a parent on 9-11. Am I interpreting this correctly?

P.S. Why do rightwing political cartoonist suck so hard. It's not just that I disagree with the point of view expressed. Their cartoons lack creativeness and they are rarely funny.

1. It actually makes no sense at all
Unless it's about the complete pointlessness of killing peoples parents.

3. I think you're right.
Once again, the right says shut up because we have to avenge the victims of 9-11, never guessing that the last thing most of them would want is their deaths being used to subvert what's best for the nation as a whole.

I could be wrong, but it also seems to be subtly trying to play the race card by suggesting that white urban liberals really don't care about the inner-city black children.

4. The cartoonist is being somewhat dishonest
the Gulf War kids are white, while the 9/11 kids are black.

There are more black soldiers in the middle east than white.

7. You beat me to it.
There probably weren't that many African-Americans working on the top floors of the WTC at 9AM.

I don't know about absolute numbers, but proportionately, you are correct about who's doing the fighting. These are disproportionately economically disadvantaged people looking for a leg up in life who thought they have found one in the Army. Suburban white kids are a minority in today's military.

8. Hmmmm....
My take on it is that the black children's daddy is sitting in a cage in Gitmo.

.... or am I reading too much into it?

10. Nope, that's the way I read it, too
It took a few minutes for me to get the punchline. The brown-skinned fathers are locked away in GITMO, the white-skinned fathers are in the Iraqi deserts.

14. I'm sorry, but you are wrong.
You are clearly not familiar with the work of BIll Doere. Doere would never make such a reference. Also, if Doere wanted to intimate that the children in the second panal were of middle-eastern decent, there are visual clues that he would have added that would have removed all doubt. The kids in the second panal are clearly supposed to be the clindren of people who died as a result of the attacks on 9-11.

17. I'm not familiar with the artist's work
but watch the "you are wrong" references. Answer this: Why are the children in the 2nd panel looking for fathers that will never come home? As noted above, there was no large number of black people who worked in the World Trade Center, and there are no large number of white people in GITMO.

18. You are obsessed with Gitmo and the race of the children
There is nothing in the cartoon about Gitmo and the race of the children is unimportant.

Why are the children in the 2nd panel looking for fathers that will never come home? Because they died on 9-11.

Why are they holding placards for fathers that are dead and won't return?

5. yes thats basically the point
the cartoonist might put it such that the dads off in Iraq are making for the possibility that there not be any more dads lost in future 9-11's. The Iraq conflict is part of the war on terrorism.

But you get the point.

28. Yes
I think you're right. Kids in the first panel are fighting because the parents of the children in the second panel lost their daddy.

Therefore 9/11 = Iraq subtle shit.

12. The soldier kids' daddy MIGHT get home, the 9/11 kids' daddy WON'T
which means...what? That's okay for us to kill Iraqi civilians because ours were killed on 9/11? But there's a huge hole in that logic--Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11!

15. No, I don't think that is the point of the cartoon.
Although I am sure that Doere thinks that the deaths of Americans on 9-11 justifies the killing of Iraqis, I don't think that is the point he is trying to make here.

13. It's a bad cartoon, I agree. But he's an equal-opportunity offender.
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 09:17 AM by FlashHarry
Here's his last one:

I took this as Judge Moore trying to shove religion down the government's throat. On edit, I suppose it could be taken the other way--that religion is a pill the govt. needs to swallow. In any case, due to its ambiguity, this is also a bad cartoon.

21. if the order of the panels were reversed ...
That is, in "chronological" order (the 9/11 kids first, then the Iraq War kids) -- it might be construed as critical of the war (more people dead, and for what?)
