Do you sometimes wish we periodically opened our forum to right-wingers?
Sometimes I get in a mood where I just love to debate and make fools out of the opposition.

I mean, we have facts and logic on our side so it would not be an arduous task.

Anyone else ever feel like putting down a freeper argument?

I used to go on the Micheal Moore forums and just start fighting right wingers all the time. Then the forums went down and I had to find something else to do. I evetually found DU and I love it. I don't miss fighting the little ignorant bastards one bit.

20. I used to post there too...
It did turn into a warzone at times but it was also kinda fun in a sadistic sort of way.

I wouldn't want DU to permanently be open to rwers, i love the community type feeling that goes on.

But once in a while, I just get the urge to lay into some moron.

If it were a matter of debating with them, I'd say "bring them on." But we all know from personal experience that they'll say anything that pops into their empty heads, half-truths, outright lies, and slander, to make a point.

This is my safe haven. I don't want them here.

6. I miss em but...
...I can see the logic in DU banning them. The forum is big enough and you'd get about 10 peopelo a week who would stumble upon this site, join. Make a bunch of obnoxious posts then get sick and leave.

I used to be a member at AlliedConservatives.com. I was usually the only LIberal poster there. Most of the people put up with me after a while and were pretty polite since I was the only guy they had to pick on. One regular was pretty awful to me usually because I always called him on his fundamentalist Christian stuff. He claimed I was intolerant of his religion, yet he had no problem telling me I was a "phony Christian" and that I had no right to call myself a Christian.

44. My problem with CG
is that the same people post these endlessly meandering mind-numbing posts on every thread. It can be fun if you need a little spark of combat. But there often is too little substance and much pomposity. Lots of Rush wannabees spouting off in rambling, no-facts diatribes, just psuedo-intellectual jargon that is meaningless.

They're so intellectually dishonest that's it's a waste of time and bandwidth engaging them. And as for "opening up" DU to them, they seem to straggle in from time to time without any prompting from us. Alert the mods and give 'em a tombstone of their very own. There are plenty of other places on the net to bang your head against that particular wall without laying brickwork here.

As a newbie, I didn't know this. I find it kind of disappointing.

What kind of posts would get one banned from DU? Anything right-wing? That would be disappointing. What kind of liberalism is it to ban people who disagree with you?

Banning people who are offensive or disruptive I can understand. But those are as likely to be left- as right- wing.

42. I see a contradiction...
...between being liberal and refusing to listen to opposing views.

I am surprised nobody else here does.

I am certainly liberal in my views. I am certainly not a Democrat, as I am not registered to vote in this country. If I had a choice, my preferences in the last election would be Bradley > McCain > Gore > Bush.

So please rethink your conditional welcome and let me know if it still stands.

Here is a paragraph from the website conservativeintellectual.com (an obvious oxymoron).

"However, McCain's voting record is not out of step with many other Republicans in the Senate. His lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union is an 85, the same as Orrin Hatch's lifetime rating."

Based on his voting record, not his PR.

I like DU just the way it is and adding some more hate is not going to help the democratic cause.

There are other boards were members can go to argue with right wingers, the Moby Political Boards used to be a good place, one can say what ever they want and not be censored on those boards so it makes for some really heated debates.

...there are pros and cons to doing so.

* Many of the folks there are blatantly racist, homophobic, and callous to the point where it raises your blood pressure.
* Many are kind, friendly, jocular folks whom it is a pleasure to interact with.
* Many have minds that are utterly closed to any opposing view.
* Many are willing to debate, and indeed there are many debates, largely based on the dichotomy between statist conservatism and leave-me-alone conservatism.
* I got banned for reasons unclear to me. I obviously spouted liberal views much of the time, but then so did others.
* It is still, to me, probably *the* most interesting community news blog on the Web.

38. Right Wingers Don't Contribute Anything of Value
I would welcome a debate with an intelligent right winger but they are as scarce as hens' teeth. The right wing hold on power comes from an appeal to vulgar ignorance. I can't imagine why anybody with half a brain would come in here and defend Bush administration policies.

Contemporary "conservatism" isn't about political dialogue, it's about a rejection of the role of informed discourse in guiding policy. Those people seem un-embarrassed about the lies Bush tells and Americans stupidly believe. They wouldn't fit in here because on most topics, we put more value on rational debate than on name-calling. Right wingers wouldn't be happy here - they are mostly ignorant vulgarians who aren't comfortable around decent people.

64. while it does limit the actual discussion possibilities...
... this is the Democratic Underground, not the Politics in General Underground. Neither is it the Liberal Underground so it is acceptable to limit the degree of liberality to those in the Democratic fold.

66. Try Usenet newsgroups
Unmoderated ones, if you are looking for a truly open discussion.

68. LOL! Clearly you have never debated a right winger
Be prepared for name calling, insults and completely illogical arguements.

If you had you would know they deal in an emotional realm. You have to be prepared for insults, name calling and completely illogical arguements.

This is Democratic Underground. It is in the name. You can take them on. There are places for that. This isn't one of them.

76. conservative voices
I've already got a nutty conservative board that I visit to face em up with the contradictions in their conservatism and their support for Bush, who is all over the place to appease Buisness. Capitalist not conservative. Anyway, You do get pretty beat-up over there.Worth the time though. Speaking to the choir is good for the soul. Not much value for the congregation though...

78. Welcome to DU, bigtree . . .

We argue plenty, and heatedly. But we do it nicely. That's
what makes us different from the conservatives.

Enjoy, and post often!!

77. I am locking this thread.
Questions about Democratic Underground policies belong in the "Ask the Administrators" forum. All discussion topics relating to Democratic Underground policies, procedures, enforcement, etc., which are posted outside of the "Ask the Administrators" forum will be locked or deleted.

I am locking this thread. Please read the rules re who is welcome here at DU.

WHO IS WELCOME ON DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND, AND WHO IS NOT

We welcome Democrats of all stripes, along with other progressives who will work with us to achieve our shared goals.

This is a "big tent" message board. We welcome a wide range of progressive opinion. You will likely encounter many points of view here that you disagree with.

We ban conservative disruptors who are opposed to the broad goals of this website. If you think overall that George W. Bush is doing a swell job, or if you wish to see Republicans win, or if you are generally supportive of conservative ideals, please do not register to post, as you will likely be banned.

If you have been banned from Democratic Underground, you are not permitted to log on again using a different username. Previously banned members will be immediately banned, regardless of behavior.

People who repeatedly and willfully break the rules, or who generally engage in rude, antisocial behavior, will be banned. It doesn't matter if you are a progressive or a long-term member of this board.
