It is alarming that someone like Summers now dictates the mission, curriculum, and even "ways of knowing" implented at Harvard. As one of the most prominent academic institutions in this country, its influence on various parts of society, including other academic institutions, is no small thing. The implications of Summers' appointment may reach as far as changing not only the nature of the graduates Harvard produces, but the entire support structure for neoliberal goals and policies by promoting and enforcing a globalized society of the most oppressive kind. A man who sees globalization as merely an increase in global competition and aims to change the curriculum to provide the tools to operate within such a system is as detrimental to the environment and human rights as Bush is. Corporatized institutions that produce and construct what and how we know to further the current system do exist. Watch out... the conservative ideology is sneaking into more and more innocuous positions. Will this be enough to warrant a paradigm shift? Am I being completely paranoid? What do you think?

Sorry to jump on your thread, but it just hit me today. I've only posted once on this forum. I've read it for a long time though. I don't mean to be rude or anything but I've got a question and I really really want to see if anyone on this forum has an answer to my question.

Are there any stats anywhere that give a breakdown of the number of Democrats, Republicans, Greens, Independents, etc. enlisted in the military?

I ask because I know from personal experience that almost everyone I have known or came into contact with that joined the military were not Republican. There's no reason to go into why so few Republicans, in my life, were not interested or needed to go in to the service. Most of you on here already know the answer.

But it hit me. This, if it can be documented and proven, is a great comeback and/or huge black eye for the Republican party. If the majority of the service is Democrat or other than Republican, isn't that a great comeback for all these neocons who keep saying if we're against the ?war(hate to call it that, more like invasion for political purposes) in Iraq, against the Bush people who don't want U.N. help, and/or against pre-emptive military actions we're unpatriotic?
