It's Daniel Shorr's 87th birthday today

Daniel was on Nixon's hate list because he dared to stand up to the Nixon WH. He is the best liberal commentator out there, and he's a must-listen every Sunday on "Weekend Edition Sunday". He sees right through the current junta and calls it as he sees it.

I hope if I get to 87, I still have the mental acuity that he has.

Happy birthday, Daniel. You're still the best at what you do.

1. Happy Birthday Daniel
He is on Saturday Weekend Edition also. His piece yesterday was great. Look it up on NPR.com. He gets Dr. Rice good.

7. Wish there were more like him.
Bob Woodward rides in Chimpy's boxers, putting out puff-piece shit like "Bush at WAR" instead of digging for dirt.(did you REALLY write "All the Presidents Men"?)

Wolf Blitzer and the REST of the TV "pretty people" WOULD say "Fear THIS" in Klingon if it rolled up the teleprompter and not even pause to wonder why they said that.

Jim Hatfield "commits suicide" and well, that's that. Too bad...But the lesson was not lost on the rest of the journalistic world.

Oh, sure, there is still some idealism out there. Usually young reporters working for local papers or TV stations who find some reall dirt going on in their cities, only to have their Editors kill the story with an admonition about "You can't publish that! They're ADVERTISERS, f'gawd's sake! the Sales Manager and Gee Emm'll have my head if we air that!"

Funny, isn't it, when we talk about people like Dan Schorr or Walter Cronkite, or even the late, great Edward R. Murrow, we don't have anyone that we can say is "carrying on with the tradition", do we?

8. Sent a birthday greeting via the npr ombudsman.
ombudsman@npr.org

Dear NPR Ombudsman,

In behalf of the 31,000 members of DemocraticUnderground.com, please pass along our heartfelt best wishes to Daniel Shor on the occassion of his 87th birthday.

Daniel Schor is a celebrated personage on our site. Over the course of his professional career, he--perhaps more than any other journalist--has consistently maintained a critical eye, avoided the prevalent practice of serving as a lapdog and mouthpiece for the government, and has had the courage to tell it like it is. We salute you, Daniel Schor! You are a genuine hero! Happy Birthday!

9. Four score and seven years ago
That was cool... not many people can say that, eh?

I try to listen to his commentaries and discussion on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday with Scott Simon. It's always a calm, rational reflection of the week.

Many more Dan!

11. I have on videotape
Back in 1990 or so, Frank Zappa guest hosted on what was then an FNN (what is now CNNFN) program called "Focus", in which he had Daniel Schorr on to interview. Zappa and he were friends, and Frank hit him up for some insights on the RW agenda of CNN (ballsy, since this was a CNN affiliate, but that was Frank for ya). Zappa himself expressed the same thing many of us on here are - we wish there more like him on the airwaves.

Incidentally, according to Schorr in that interview, it was Ted Turner who wanted Schorr to help him get CNN off the ground back in 1980.

12. I would never have known
he's that old. I've only heard him a few times on NPR and he still seems very sharp. His analysis was right on. A very happy bday indeed!
