Fucking George Will
If Europeans weren't on vacation so much, maybe they wouldn't have to whine about American power.

I intend to stop next week. But this week, it's August, vacation time, and I must note that Europeans take too much vacation time. They constantly complain about American economic power, and the political influence and military supremacy that economic power makes possible. But maybe Europeans would better off — richer, more powerful, more able to flex their geopolitical muscles — if they took less time off. The relatively hard-working British — hardworking by European standards — get 28 paid vacation days a year. Germans get 35, the French, 37, Italians, 42.

Americans Working Harder

The Los Angeles Times reports that Americans have an average of just sixteen vacation days a year, and they are vacationing less and less — 10 percent less this year than last. A poll shows that one in five Americans feels guilty about taking a vacation. Twelve percent do not plan to take any vacation. And modern technologies — computers, Blackberries, cell phones — allow many Americans to bring their work with them.

The Economist magazine reports that much of the per capita wealth difference between Europe and America can be explained by vacation habits.

So when Europeans are at the beach, brooding about American power, perhaps they should notice that they are … at the beach.

Joys of Paris in August

There is one thing to be said for the European way with vacations: Paris — lovely Paris — is one of those enchanting places where, as the poet said, every prospect pleases and only man is vile.

But in August, the people of Paris are away from Paris — on vacation, even more than usual.
Some say that Paris is at its best in August.
I would not say that, because it is high time Americans stopped saying rude things about Europeans.

I see, George. We all have to be wage slaves in the great and glorious US of A, so that we can keep the military-industrial complex at its highest rate of wardom, meanwhile the nancy-boy Europeans get 5-6 weeks of paid vacation a year. I know whose values I agree with more.

I wonder how much vacation you take every year, George???

1. I would venture most Amerians are not aware of these facts :
"The relatively hard-working British — hardworking by European standards — get 28 paid vacation days a year. Germans get 35, the French, 37, Italians, 42.

Americans Working Harder

3. And don't expect them to be informed about it any time soon
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 09:01 AM by marshallplan
This is truly a corporo-fascist state. We wouldn't want the "little people" to start getting uppity, would we?

And anyway, most people are so afraid of losing their jobs in a horrible job-market that they probably wouldn't open their mouths to complain. We may have one of the world's best standards of living judged by consumer goods owned, but the rest of what goes into a standard of living , such as leisure time, is completely ignored.

And that's totally A-OK with Georgie-boy.

8. Damn straight!
I work six fucking days a week and haven't has 'a vacation' since probably 87' that I didn't take from being laid off between samples or other. The numbers are already in: Americans have the least logged vacation time of any insdustrial nation; screw him. Will always has his head up his white ass and just loves to hear the sound of his own voice. He needs to get off his fucking 'white bread gravy train' and stop surreptitously lobbying for the travel industry like the Bush Family Oligarchy can only afford to de boarding out of one of Jed's docks down and actually in the land of the vacation/retirment home...

What a jackass. To hell with George Will.

5. Vacation Time
Looked at the web site article, didn't see a web address for Will. Would have liked to ask him the same question you did. But I guess it doesn't matter if you are out of work, as that 's kind of like an extended vacation. You just can't afford to go anywhere. Oh wait now I know why we don't need vacation time we can't afford to drive across the street because of high gas prices, darn!

6. infant mortality, anyone?
For all of our servitude to our corporate masters, you'd think there'd be some payoff for us. If not health care, then maybe something besides the industrialized world's highest infant mortality rate.

9. Oh, please don't get me started
1. We're all wage-slaves scared to death of losing our jobs, and working harder and for longer hours than any equivalent first world country
2. There are areas in this country that have third-world infant mortality rates and life-expectancy
3. The majority of people don't even know the first 2 facts.
4. Our education system is so lousy that creationism is likely to be taught in a school district near you

I could go on, but sometimes wonder what's the point.

10. "Vacations?? WE don' NEED no STEENKEEN VACATIONS!!!"
We're MURKANS! The roughest, toughest workers in the world! When our ancestors came to these shores, did we take the wimpy way out and let the Indians show us how to live here? NO! We did it OUR WAY, and let starvation and disease decimate us the first few winters. But we GOT TOUGH! We made it! (sure, there was less than 1/2 of us left, but that's not important)

And don't forget our proud heritage of INDENTURED SERVITUDE, Dude! We're USED to working forever for nothing!

And read the new issue of National Geographic about the farm workers and prostitutes who are brought here in slavery and never get a day off. Why, they're more MURKAN than they'll ever know! The biggest difference between them and us is that we get a little money in exchange for our lives....

But don't forget-our Glorious Leader gets more than 2 months a year off work...Not counting the time he's dead-drunk in the White House...

11. So how many workplace shootings
are there in Europe every year? Maybe there are fewer acts of violence at European workplaces because the workers there aren't as stressed out over all the hours and lack of free time just to be.

I wonder how many vacation days George Will gets? I seem to notice media types take a lot of vacation time like their leader, W.

Why is it OK for rich people like Will and W to take copious amounts of vacation but workers are told to accept a paltry 16 days!

When will people have had enough?

13. Maybe there should be more vacation time to help with employment.
If 50MM people took, say, 2 more weeks, we'd need 2 million or so to keep the same relative output....so why is that so bad? Sure, there's no free lunch, but it would probably help the US workers to have a life outside the job.

Georgie is the shrill little prikkk in gym class who would rather stand on the sidelines in his keds, shorts pulled up camel toe high, and wax mastubatory how the kids on the field could not hold his panties in a game of sniffle ball.

George Will once was a principled conservative. Now he is just an elitist mouthpiece for the robber baron class.
