The DLC is no better at getting elected than Liberals
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 08:24 PM by BayCityProgressive
Why do we continue to give in to the DLC when their policies have repeatedly failed? I am not saying we liberals have all the answers...but the DLC is not working. Even Clinton got into office because of Perot. Clinton got no higher of a percentage of the vote than Dukakis did, really. Senator Boxer is the third highest vote getter in the country and she is a liberal. Senator Feingold is a liberal in a swing state and was decisively re-elected. Paul Wellstone was a liberal and the first Dem senator from Minnesota elected since 1978, AND he was re-elected. Kucinich is very liberal and won his seat from a Republican. Why aren't these victories "proof" of the Liberal way being the correct path? After all, Clinton never got more than 50% of the vote, we lost congress and the senate. All of our southern candidates have lost elections. What is so great about the DLC?

1. Good question
Maybe the fact that they control so many of the party insiders that it really doesn't matter about their track record because they won't really care so long as they stay where they are at.

2. It is my belief
that they are corporatists who have taken over the party because liberals scared the establishment too much from the 1930's-the 70's and so the rich took over the people's party to stop any more loss of power. It was a slow subtle shift to the Right that our party has taken. They were sneaky about it. In the 70's the "centrists" began deregulating industry, in the 80's they phased out the word "liberal", and in the 90's they OK'ed at least half of the GOP agenda and basically forced people into a "well at least we aren't Republicans" mode.

4. The DLC may have lost a few elections,

but they have made TONS of money. The DLC is incredibly successful.
They have reaped a harvest from:

1) Dumbass Democrats who keep sending them money,

2) From their grateful Corporate sponsors who pay them for legislation that improves their bottom line and handle any pesky labor problems. (NAFTA)

3. I won't support another DLCer even if they threaten to kick me off DU.
I've been here for three years. It is clear I am a progressive. I will no longer be bullied into going against my beliefs and good judgment.

7. I'm with you, BCP
You can find the Progressive Democrats here:

http://www.pdamerica.org/

They are building grassroots. We have a local chapter up and running in Minneapolis. I believe there are a number (16?) of new chapters across the country and adding daily.

Progressive Democrats of America are hosting a summit in Washington, DC the weekend after the coronation (Jan21st). The info is posted on the weblink. Check it out.

8. Note
the last northern 'liberal' democratic elected was JFK who, looking back on it now, governed more centrist that his rhetoric. Not that I like being 'republican lite', but even Kerry knew he had to have the center in order to win (which he did except for the FRAUD) the election. Let us take a page from the repugs play book and present ourselves as compassionate liberals - which shouldn't be so difficult since that is basically what we are. Unlike the repugs, we will not have to try to sell a lie to the centrists of our nation every election cycle. Don't kick out the DLC, but turn the tables on them. Lets take our party back from them but keep them around to keep collecting the big bucks and present a non threatening front to those who distrust anything labeled liberal or progressive.
