Jeb Bush argues that marriage is conflict of interest....
While George Bush claims that marriage is sacred, Jeb Bush thinks that a husband has too many conflicts of interest to speak for his own wife. Jeb Bush is pushing for big government to get between a man and his wife when it comes to the most important decision possible. Unless Jeb Bush is pushing for his own political career and appealing to his ''base'' to be more important than a husband and wife’s responsibilities to each other.

Quote from Florida filing in attempt to have State Government judgment held as having higher standing in woman’s life than her own husband’s judgment: ''Terri Schiavo's husband and guardian, had financial and personal conflicts of interest that made it impossible for him adequately to protect her interests,'' the filing said.

''Terri Schiavo had never been adequately represented at any point during the substituted judgment trial,'' it said. From: Florida governor turns to US Supreme Court in euthanasia case

Jeb Bush apparently believes that marriage vows and the commitment of marriage give no special weight to the opinions of a husband over how his wife is treated medically. Jeb Bush apparently believes a husband is just some other stranger hanging around the hospital, while the Governor back in the state capitol should be making these medical decisions instead.

It's a sad and pathetic demonstration of how conservatives really feel about the ''sanctity of marriage''.

2. Um ... doesn't Terri Schiavo's husband want to marry someone else?
I'm pretty sure he does, and Jeb is only supporting Terri's family because it's a right-to-life case.

3. I think that there are a lot of issues in this case
There are issues such as how functional is she, whether the severely handicapped should live, are feeding tubes really life support or extraordinary medical technology, the husband's intentions and what should be done if a patient has no living will. Personally, I was made to fill out a form asking my treatment and recesitation preferences before a relatively routine medical test, which did make me a bit uneasy, but perhaps is a good idea for medical providers to ask patients about regularly.
I think being married does give one certain privleges on the otherhand, it is in the interests of the state to protect individuals as well. For example, if Ms. Shiavo had become bed ridden in her own home and Mr. Shiavo refused to feed her or take her somewhere to get the care she needed and she died as a result, he would probably be charged with some sort of crime. Some well meaning people see the case like that. Jeb probably has a political agenda but don't assume that everyone who doesn't see the case your way as evil.
