Fox just did a direct hit on DU - related to Tsunami
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 11:58 AM by doxieone
Regarding causes of the tsunami.

They showed the DU web site, and quoted from DU one cause for it was an underground nuclear explosion.

105. Um, the difference is that Fox is supposedly a news source.
We all know that's not the case, but they do make that pretense.

The other difference is that tens of thousands of people post here anonymously, some of those anonymous posters are here only to discredit the whole site. Presumably the Fox "news" team doesn't actively misrepresent facts in order to discredit the whole organization. They actively misrepresent facts because their viewers are too stupid to find out the truth. In reliance on their audiences' sustained ignorance Fox lies to further a political agenda. Half the population is below average and they too need a TV station, Fox fills that gap.

Sorry, but the people that watch Faux are going to watch Faux and believe whatever they are told to believe by the Faux News crew.

What we say or don't say is irrelevant, they will still attack us.

110. Your first post seemed to compare our Fox taunts
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 07:27 PM by spotbird
to Fox's manipulative, misleading and biased report about DU.

My reply was simply to point out that Fox claims to be a news organization, often responsibility for content accompanies that claim. Fox is irresponsible so the rule might not apply here, but let's pretend it does for the sake of argument.

Democratic Underground claims to be a political forum, and the DU administrators don't even know what is said in all the discussion forums, much less claim to endorse those views as truthful.

Therefore, our knocking Fox is not the same as their misrepresentations about us, we are not like things....Well, we are usually more accurate than Fox which should make us a news organization, and they are more political than us which should make them a political forum, but you follow, I hope.

I hope you told your other friends about DU, it's my favorite website. I am very liberal (as are many here) but it is very interesting to see different, intellectually based viewpoints. You won't find much other then swears and bad grammar on those uber-conservative websites. It's nice to talk with well informed people. (I'm assuming you are also smart because you read The New York times). Hope you like it here! :)

actually the NYT's article DID point out the debunking on the DU itself. I'm sure that escaped Faux's notice though.

"What was lost in the sniping over the Democratic Underground posting was the fact that the follow-up comments were a sober discussion of what actually causes earthquakes. The first response to the posting asked, "Earthquakes have been happening since the beginning of time ... How would you explain them?"

Further comments explained the movement of tectonic plates and provided links to sites explaining earthquakes and tsunamis from the United States Geological Survey and other authoritative sources."

32. The corporate media is threatened by alternative news sites.
Wrote this to the now locked thread...

Conspiracy Theories are often unreported news, you know.

The majors like to think that if they don't report it, it didn't happen.

If people are straying from the reservation to get their news, this is the first thing they say. They have to defend their turf.

Unfortunately for them, they are big, slow, and dumb. The Intarnets are big, fast, and full of relatively intelligent people, many of whom are here.

Also, we don't buy the official story on a lot of things, because it often doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense. When the news doesn't make sense, people are tempted to believe more sensible sounding explanations. That is the cause of most actual conspiracy theory.

For example: The magic bullet theory floated by Arlen Specter and accepted by the Warren Commission didn't make any sense. People sat at home and said, "Hmmm...ooookay." or "Something about that is kind of funny." Later speculation about the grassy knoll took years to come out, and even to this day is considered "conspiracy theory."

Nowadays, people can go out and share information and find out what's really happening, and be debunked or confirmed in real time. The networks are, understandably, a bit worried. Their monopoly on the truth is threatened.

Perhaps if they stopped reporting obvious bullshit, the Intarnets wouldn't be such a challenge to them

106. Most People Aren't Paranoid Enough
Dear DUers,

Remember that little boy who blew the whistle on the Emperor's New Clothes? If that happened now, they'd call that kid a conspiracy theorist and put a tin foil hat on him. The media certainly wouldn't investigate the actual claim.

That's why we keep getting hit with new outrages and crimes -- fabricated wars, stolen elections. People don't believe reality when they see it. They call it "conspiracy theory."

Yours for Truth,
David

116. The REAL question here, arwalden, is the Soviet/Orwellian one
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 07:59 PM by tom_paine
You know, the one Free Americans have been asking ourselves... some since 1993 (not me, though, I slept until 2000 jolted me awake)...when the Busheviks became clearly successful at bullying and cowering Corporate TV Pravda, then to a degree I didn't think possible driving and controlled what and why and how long item get talked about...

How in hell does DU get spotlighted for craziness and NaziStormtrooper.com (some know it as Free Republic which supports Slave Empire in reality) NEVER does?!?

A question worthy to be asked by Sakharov to Brezhnev, because Totalitarians both Rightists Busheviks and Leftist Bolsheviks are so similar.

In addition to the loopy and evil shit that is on Freepland regarding the current tsunami and it's victims, they have long exceeded DU's quantity of vile loopiness by a factor of 10!

I have never looked at NaziStormtrooper.com for more than 15 min. without finding some Freeper's Wet Dream of Randomly Murdering Liberals exposed for everyone to see.

The sheer vile horror of what they say as a matter of course, which has nothing to do with their politics, but is bereft of humanity (as you would expect by the victims of Goebbels v2.0 Propaganda Edifice) as well.

Does stuff like that get say on DU? Occasionally. But in all my time spent on DU, I have only heard a similar fantasy about murdering Busheviks ONCE.

That is in 4 years of often daily visits, numbering OVER A thousand, no doubt)

I have dallied on Nazistormtrooper.com perhaps two dozen timeS in the same period, never spending more than 15 min. and I have seen more than one Murderous Bushevik Fantasy lovingly related more than once for eacj pf the seldom visits.

But how is it that such thing can go by their routinely, but even the laughably supposed "Liberal Media" has never mentioned them.

Hell, they invented "Poll Freeping" so much so it bears their name and literally have skewed viortually every political poll for probably 8 years.

Cue crickets chriping. The invention of "poll Freeping" for large scale use on internet polls is only say about a HUNDRED times more newsworthy than the anonymous ravings of Message Borad Posters.

Yet silence. Always silence from Corporate Pravda regarding things that make THE PARTY or The Emperor look bad.

Dear God, it is undoubtedly what the oppositions to both the Leftists Soviets and the Rightists Nazis must have felt when nothing that was done to them or what they did to try and become free EVER made Pravda or Der Sturmer.

Or Fox "News".

Madness. We live in a nation gone insane. Clinically insane.

69. Permanent thread on the homepage ridiculing right-wing conspiracy theories
The problem is, the names Fox is calling SOME of us are true

Where FOX News CORRECT is in calling the "Earthquake Conspiracy Theorists" misinformed or crazy.

Where FOX is WRONG is in characterizing ALL of us and ALL of our conspiracy theories as misinformed and crazy.

Not all conspiracies are false, and not all conspiracies are true.

The same media that has lied to us about politics, has also been lying to us about science. No wonder we're confused!

What's the old metaphor? It's like teaching a dog to sit, and then kicking it when it does?

If we're mis-informed about science, it's because Fox TV has been partially responsible for mis-informing us-- along with the other networks that feed us a steady diet of pseudo-documentaries about UFOs, psychic detectives, and Area 51.

WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR THE SAME PEOPLE WHO KNOW THE MEDIA HAS BEEN LYING TO US ABOUT POLITICS IS ALSO LYING TO US ABOUT SCIENCE!

They mis-inform us about science, and then call us crackpots and kooks when we are mis-informed about science. What assholes.

In any case...

We should have a permanent thread that debunks and ridicules the right-wing conspiracy theories that have lingered over the years.

The Ruby Ridge Conspiracy
The Waco Branch Davidian Conspiracy
... and the Oklahoma City attack by right-wing nuts that believed in them

The Arkanside Body Count

Holocaust Revisionism

And my personal favorite right-wing conspiracy theory...
Bill Clinton attacking Osama Bin Laden was a "wag the dog" conspiracy to divert attention from Monica / Zippergate

Here are some sites dealing with right-wing conspiracy nuts:

---

Now, if I remember correctly, The Skull and Bones Club conspiracy theories used to belong to the right wing when Clinton was president.

Once Republican Skull and Bones alumni are president, the right seems to dump the whole subject, and it gets taken up by the left.

It looks like UFOs, Alien Abductions, and Tesla weapons seem to be shared equally by the left and the right.

Correct me if I am wrong on those points, I'm not sure.

Also, are conspiracies about Freemasons, The Illuminati and such in the domain of the left, the domain of the right, or both?

In any case, let's put a permanent, MODERATED thread on the front page debunking and ridiculing the conspiracy theories of the right wing repugs.

107. Right-wing Conspiracy Theories
are not all crazy. Ian mentions

The Waco Branch Davidian Conspiracy and
The Arkanside Body Count (presumably including Clintonian involvement in the CIA's cocaine trafficking)

as examples. Well, there is probably much truth to a lot of this stuff. For example, exposes of the Waco massacre have been done by journalists of both Left and Right. The government story on that doesn't hold any more water than the official version of 9/11.

As I keep saying --
Most people aren't paranoid enough. After what we've seen and heard over the last four years, we shouldn't accept anything we see in the MSM at face value. Anything. If you're not paranoid, you haven't been paying attention.

Yours for democracy,
David

50. Fox goes to court to defend the right to knowingly lie to the public
Journalists challenge Fox, get $1 million legal bill

TV Spy’s ShopTalk reported Monday that two TV journalists have challenged the license renewal of WTVT Fox-13, charging that it deliberately broadcast false news reports about Monsanto’s secret use of potentially cancer-causing growth hormones in milk. Reporters Jane Akre and Steve Wilson filed the petition Monday against Fox’s Tampa station after a Florida Appeals Court overturned a $425,000 jury award to them and then ordered them to pay Fox’s $1 million legal bill for defending itself against their Whistleblower lawsuit. The court said broadcasting false news reports is not a crime, striking grounds for their suit. (emphasis mine /jc) The journalists are appealing.

Their petition to the Federal Communications Commission to deny the station's license renewal includes evidence that the station’s managers repeatedly ordered them to distort a series of news reports about Monsanto’s secret use of the artificial hormone in dairy cattle throughout Florida and nationally. The reporters charge that station executives demanded their news stories be falsified to avoid a lawsuit by Monsanto and potential loss of advertising from the dairy industry. The petition also charges WTVT violated federal rules by removing complaints about the hormone story from its files.

84. Is this their way of saying we've arrived?
Faux News bashes any 'liberal' or 'libertarian' outlet that doesn't toe the GOP/Neocon line. Of course they come after DU. Just like they will go after anyone who isn't a Hannitized Bush cheerleader.

As for the whacky poster who talked about the Tsunami being caused by underwater nuke tests, there was another poster with the opinion that undersea drilling had something to do with it. This is an open forum with relatively lax rules for posters and debated. Kooky stuff will get posted, to which the rest of us collectively roll our eyes and enthusiastically debunk.

As for the 'conspiracy theorists' out there, well, they have them on their side, too. Most threads on DU have nothing to do with conspiracies, but more to do with policy and politics. Any neutral or open-minded person coming here will see that fairly quickly. As for the trolls, I just consider that graffiti on the walls on the way to the train. I'll still get on the train.

It doesn't help that Bush's father helped to fund the nazis, that Bush was skull and bones, that Bush has ties to the Saudi royal family, that Bush had plans in place to invade Iraq prior to 911, need I go on?

I mean this administration lends itself to conspiracy theories like none other in history!

I guess my point is it's almost impossible to tell who's telling the truth and who is embellishing (or out and out lying) for political purposes...there IS one big difference, the right never gets called on it in the MSM.

Maybe I should come up with a post along the lines of the "Great Egg" science fiction story from the 30's.

"My God, the increasing earthquake frequency means that the creature in the earth is about to hatch. Now we know why Our Great Leader, in his infinite foresight, wanted to build an ark to take the righteous to Mars, and off of this doomed vessel Earth."

That should really generate some more traffic.

On second thought, maybe someone should explain to them that this is an anonymous Internet forum. Somewhat tamer than most Internet forums, but still fairly freewheeling.

123. I just came in to see if there was anything on this
I was passing through the living room and the Hubby had on the news( fox) although forbidden in this house. (he does it it piss me off) and I glanced at the screen, while waves of nausea passed over hearing O'Riely's voice, to be the DU page and I thought WTF is this so I came in here to see what was going on. Can you beleive it must be slow news night.

A fine example of investigative journalism if there ever was one.

Shit it wouldn't even pass for news in a high school paper, they don't even provide a link to the comment, I wonder if even that was real.
