Laura Bush*s $700 Haircut
(snip)

Meanwhile, our favorite TV nugget of the day so far came courtesy of Barbara Walters, who matter-of-factly informed viewers that Laura Bush recently had her hair done by famed New York City stylist Sally Hershberger, who charges $700 for a haircut. Just take a moment to think back to the go-go '90s, and try to imagine what the press' hysterical reaction would have been if word ever leaked out that Hillary Clinton had sat down for a $700 trim.

92. I did spend money yesterday...
I spent a total of $5.00 to park downtown Seattle so I could attend the anti-inauguration rally.

But that was it--I didn't even buy a latte.

101. I know
it was that Bon Marche parking garage and for two hours (we didn't stay for the march to the federal building) it was $5.00. I was shocked. When I go to half or all day meetings downtown, it seems I cannot spend less than $20.

Resisting the latte was very difficult for me.

I got caught in traffic near LAX when the famous haircut aboard Air Force One happened. I was pretty pissed about it at the time.

I don't care what anyone spends on their looks, just don't inconvenience the rest of us while you do it.

54. Sure
I was working and living in the immediate LAX area at the time. They shutdown portions of Airport Blvd and Imperial Hwy for some time. Local LEOs said "Air Force One is nearby. It stayed that way for 2+ hours. Local media supported that explanation the next day.

IMO, a politicians autobiography is not a credible cite to me...they all lie, (though the results vary). Snopes not withstanding, it was one hell of a traffic mess, and I was stuck in it.

This was pretty thoroughly debunked at the time, by sources other than Clinton's autobiography. It's too bad you were stuck in traffic, but Clinton didn't cause it.

56. A few thoughts...
When I taught English (levels from junior high to college), I found that careless thought processes were often reflected in careless syntax. Your first post was not bad (somebody else do it for you?) but the second is peppered with errors: shutdown in this sense should be shut down (2 words); you've omitted the close quotation marks after the word nearby; politicians should have an apostrophe (politician's); there should be no comma after lie; notwithstanding is one word, not two.

Sorry to be so bitchy, but when I see careless reasoning coupled with careless grammar, I can't bear it. Especially when NPR has been Lewinskying Bush all morning.

because they shut down roads that the presidential motorcade travels on. I've endured it numerous times when other presidents (including Bush) have flown into town. It's NOT about a haircut, it's about security and the president's schedule.

yep, cheney came to my lil kansas city for a quick fundraiser last year. I work right by a major highway and we basically couldn't leave work until he had gone to the one-hour fundraiser and then got back to the airport for his flight outta dodge. So, if the FAA says the extra 10 minutes didn't cause delays, it was probably true. It was just the fact that security is tight and closes so many roads, onramps and access streets when a dignitary is in town. If you can call Cheney a dignitary, anyway.

85. Good job. Why is it Busheviks are so compelled to lie all the time?
Is it that if their Godly Fuhrer and his Minions do it, then it's good enough for them?

Is it, like the Nazis, they are so bereft of anything but their Id whjich has been replaced by Der Fuhrer that they BELIEV the lies?

Do they believe that their lies in the service of their Godly and Noble Fuhrer are excused because they are fighting Pure Evil like the Jews...errr...liberals (sorry, I sometimes get my Right-Wing Demonization groups from different eras mixed up)?

Who knows? Who can tell?

What I do know is that the Second Cousins of the Thought Processes of the Nazis (the Kinder and Gentler Nazis) are HERE, and they rule us. If things get economically bad, they may go the rest of the way.

73. The debunking was of the claim that AIR traffic was tied up...
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 11:24 AM by JHB
...not ground traffic. And it wasn't the haircut that tied up the roads for 2 hours, it was the general security procedure.

As for non-autobiography sources, how about the Columbia Journalism Review:
http://www.cjr.org/archives.asp?url=/93/5/d_l.asp
* LAUREL to New York Newsday, and to staff writer Glenn Kessler, for a record-breaking solo flight. With most of the nation's news media zooming in on the president's $ 200 haircut on the Los Angeles Airport runway and roaring about the disruptions his hirsutic hubris caused, Kessler took off in a different direction -- and landed on some hard, concrete facts. His analysis of Federal Aviation Administration records, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, revealed that, contrary to stories of circling planes, jammed-up runways, and inconvenienced passengers (and contrary, too, to the apology the White House felt pressured to make), only one (unscheduled) air taxi reported an actual (two-minute) delay. Unfortunately, most of the nation's news media, in usual near-perfect formation, found neither time nor space to correct a story that had been wildly off course.

Blame your local officials for not working out alternate routes, or the Secret Service for enforcing this procedure, but don't just throw it in Clinton's lap.

ON Edit: speaking of lying (or at least gross imprecision), I guess you should provide your own link to prove the road was shut down. Guess I'm too used to the presidential traffic tie-ups in NYC (all presidents) that I gave you the benefit of the doubt.

Edited on Sun Jan-23-05 11:54 PM by Djinn
but surely if:

..."it wasn't the haircut that tied up the roads for 2 hours, it was the general security procedure."

then the fact that that plane stayed in place for extra time to provide a haircut for Clinton then the general security procedures would have been in place for longer thereby blocking traffic for a bit longer??

Either way - unless pickles had the public pay for her haircut - who gives a stuff? people everywhere pay WAAAY to much for stuff simply because they can, do you think anyone needs to pay hundreds of dollars for a pair of runners made for $2 or that anyone (in the country I live in anyway) needs to pay cash for bottled water?

76. W A I T A M I N U T E ! ! !
Getting a haircut and shutting down the airport and highways around it are two different things...

When Bill Clinton came to Kansas City (I don't know which year offhand) and spoke in Independence (just east of KC), the freeway going to Kansas City International (I-29) was shut down for some time from Kansas City to the airport, awaiting his motorcade traveling from his speech to Air Force 1. I believe this was standard procedure. I know because my wife and I were planning on having dinner at Weston, a small town north of the airport. We could not take I-29 and had to drive backroads to Weston. Every on-ramp to I-29 had a police car or a highway patrol car and officers blocking entrance to the freeway.

So you need to differentiate between being caught in traffic due to standard procedure of the US Secret Service and blaming your inconvenience on a f*cking lie like the Right-Wing's fabrication of a over-priced haircut!

78. Here's some points to ponder, MC
9/1/2002 - Richfield, Ohio. Nowhere near an airport. Traffic tied up all around the small town almost the entire day - George W. Bush in town for a fundraiser - invitation only. Traffic stopped not only on local roads but I-77 and the turnpike. Security reasons. 2 hours seems reasonable compared to that.

Clinton 90s - here's a fun one. Then-governor George Voinovich (R) was upset because he was in Cleveland and needed to get to Columbus (Ohio). Columbus is a two-hour drive from Cleveland - and this would not have been rush hour. GV was so in a hurry that he ordered his pilot to violate the FEDERAL GUIDELINES that restrict airspace around AF1. Even emergency flights are likely to be diverted. GV just HAD to take off from the same airport, which was conveniently located RIGHT NEXT TO I-71, which goes directly to Columbus. After he was fined, GV tried to use the taxpayers' money (read: OUR MONEY) to pay off his fine. The pilot nearly lost his license due to GV's partisan tactics.

Oh, by the way, George Voinovich, mayor of Cleveland at the time, never complained about George H. W. Bush tying up the airport and traffic in Cleveland during GHWB's visit in 1989. Nor did he mention any problems he had about GWB's multiple visits to Ohio. Guess he was too busy bitching about Kerry's visits.

Sorry, but I've got to call BS on that one. Your plane may have been delayed, but it wasn't because of Clinton.

That story is a myth perpetrated by the right-wing. They love to repeat it, even though no planes were delayed by Clinton's haircut and the story was retracted by the mainstream media shortly after it was printed.

Nice try, though.

36. not true, according to Clinton
From his autobiography:

...Unfortunately, most Americans never heard about the basketball game because I got a haircut. I hadn’t found a barber in Washington yet; I couldn’t go back to Arkansas every three weeks to see Jim Miles, and my hair was too long. Hillary had had her hair done by a man in Los Angeles, Cristophe Schatteman, who was a friend of the Thomasons and whom I liked very much. I asked Cristophe if he would be willing to give me a quick trim. He agreed to do it and met me in my private quarters on Air Force One. Before we started, I asked the Secret Service not once, but twice, to make sure I wouldn’t cause any delay in takeoffs or landings if I put off our departure for a few minutes. They checked with the airport personnel, who said it would be no problem. Then I asked Cristophe just to make me presentable as quickly as possible. He did, in ten minutes or so, and we took off.

The next thing I knew, there was a story out that I had kept two runways tied up for an hour, inconveniencing thousands of people, while I got a $200 haircut from a fancy hairdresser who was known only by his first name. Forget the basketball game with inner-city kids; the irresistible news was that I had shed my Arkansas roots and populist politics for an expensive indulgence. It was a great story, but it wasn’t true. First of all, I didn’t pay $200 for the ten-minute trim. Second, I didn’t keep anybody waiting to take off or land, as the Federal Aviation Administration records showed when they were finally released a few weeks later. I was appalled that anyone would think I’d do such a thing. I might have been President, but Mother would still have given me a whipping if I’d kept a lot of people waiting an hour while I got a haircut, much less a $200 one...

The haircut is known as a wedge, made popular by skater Dorothy Hammill way back then. Of course, I used to go to the beauty school for a cheap haircut. I got tired of the prima donna celebrity hair stylists in LA and found out I could get as good a haircut from the students under the guidance of an instructor as paying out a lot for the same thing.

31. It may depend on how much moola the beautician stands to
lose by giving her a haircut. Like for instance, if he has to be flown somewhere and go through security and other nonsense and it might cost him that much money in lost fees, then it would make sense that he would charge a lot more. I used to charge a lot for my services (acctg.) if I had to travel across town for a half hour job. I would charge them for four hours because it would screw up my morning that I could be making money at my office.

28. I get the impression that she's not really interested in
being First Lady or George's prop wife. So maybe it's easier when she has to do public functions. You know, get out of the bathrobe, take a shower, get dressed, slather some make-up on and slap a wig on. Getting your hair done is an extra bunch of time you could be out on the balcony smoking a cig and reading a romance novel. Just my assumption of course. Only her personal maid knows for sure and would I love to get her to talk.

128. it is a vile amount to spend on a haircut
but then again it's relative - I only pay 50 for mine (and I've got REALLY long hair that I get dyed as well) and STILL feel it's too much, my friend pays 250 every 6 weeks just for a trim, but I spend money on trashy magazines. She spends HEAPS on travelling, but I spend heaps on eating out (hate cooking).

Almost everyone in the western world spends money on stuff that's either not neccesary, not important or not worth anywhere near what we pay for it - the feeding tsunami victims theory can be applied to ALL of us - if every DUer only bought clothes when the old ones wore out, got barber haircuts (if at all) ate plain food, stopped drinking and/or smoking we could all be donating a shitload to charity.

33. It happened with Clinton...
Some time in the 1990's Bill Clinton had some big name hair stylist come on board Air Force One for a $500 haircut. It also cost AF1 thousands (I believe) while being held up. At the time there was a stink about it as can be expected (personally I did't care, it was a beat up).

37. one more time, it isn't true
From Clinton's autobiography:

...Unfortunately, most Americans never heard about the basketball game because I got a haircut.

75. and this:
http://www.cjr.org/archives.asp?url=/93/5/d_l.asp

47. See the previous postings
From what I've learned it did in fact happen, however, the point is it was a typical media beat up as I said in my original post. But..it did (emphasize did) happen. In other words, Clinton got some fancy hair cutter on board Air Force One, payed hundreds of dollars for it, it "held up" the plane (technically speaking) for (only) ten minutes and this probably did cost some money for plane costs etc (Clinton didn't say what the costs were which is interesting). I also never said that other people or planes were held up (which they weren't) As I said, I didn't have a problem and couldn't believe myself the fuss that was made over it. I'm a bit surprised at those who tried to "debunk" my original posting. You can't debunk something that happened.

Nuff' said about this side issue...

48. The problem
As I recall, during the election, the GOP took note of Kerry's haircut or personal grooming, noting that he was an elite, metrosexual, out of touch with the American public.

Why does the GOP condemnation work and liberal condemnation of L. Bush for her elitist haircut fail? Because, we have allowed ourselves to be defined by the Right for far too long. I guarantee that your average 30,000$ a year republican will find no fault in L. Bush's extravagant hair grooming. Why? She is entitled. The republicans have fought long and hard for the people of the U.S. and the world, to bring freedom and democracy. The liberals, they are elitist, selfish and self-centered. To spend so much on a mere haircut, would prove this assertion.

The time has come to redefine the right for what they are and dispel the false representation of the left. This is our only hope. The GOP lie machine is very effective in painting itself in positive light and condemning liberals for the sins which they commit.

64. She paid $700 for THAT?
You can go to the place in the mall, drop $35, and get the exact same haircut.

Now understand: under certain circumstances, $700 for a haircut is justifiable. Here I'm thinking high-end models and actors who absolutely cannot risk getting a bad haircut, and we've all gotten those. But Laura Bush isn't in that category.

Besides, her hairstyle isn't that complex. You can go to the cosmetology school at Fayetteville Tech and get that cut.

It is only proper that the wife of our Godly, Noble and Glorious Fuhrer should have a proper haircut and the foolish vapid Serfs of Imperial Amerika should not be told to hate it, but to love that fact that their Bettors know how to treat themselves right.

Now of course if you're a Traitorous Subhuman Immoral Person so bereft of character that you DARE question ANYTHING the Imperial Family has done (let alone a member of a group who ACTIVELY OPPOSES), then it is only right and proper that an inferior person lacking breeding like Hillary Clinton, that pretentious non-aristocratic upstart, SHOULD be criticized for exorbitant spending on hair care.

122. She got ripped off, But.....
I still like Laura, with her generous butt, tacky clothes, bad haircut, spacy stare, obsession with dogs, and all.

I sympathize with her. A registered Democrat when she married the nitwit, a smoker of nicotine and other substances, a voracious reader, she just does not give much in the way of a shit, and good for her. No one elected her, she made an unfortunate choice when she married, and she is sticking with it, for reasons known only to herself (at this point, if she dumped the buffoon, where could she get protection? She's screwed!!! Rock....? Or HARD PLACE??? Pick one, Laura, PICK ONE!).

Anyone who voted for or against her has the right to complain about her...but she hasn't been on any ballot, and as far as I am concerned, she's just a shmuck along for the ride. A DISTRACTION. She doesn't make policy, she has no power. They use her when they need her, same as her kids. Pick on her, and provide fodder to the wingnuts. Aren't we meanies!!!

Not worth the trouble to criticize, and probably deserving of our sympathy. I know I'd feel sorry for anyone in her shoes....

Her husband, on the other hand, is a serious piece of work. The focus should be on him, not her.

123. From the whitehouse.gov website (god bless our tax dollars)
Remarks of Mrs. Cheney and the Vice President Following a Debate Watching Party
Embassy Suites Hotel
Coraopolis, Pennsylvania
October 13, 2004

MRS. CHENEY: ... John Kerry tries to put a bunch of fancy, fancy talk -- tried to disguise that record, sort of like his fancy haircut, fancy manicure, tried to disguise the whole thing. ... And in Wyoming, we've got a saying for what it is when you keep trying to make something that's not so good look good, we call it putting lipstick on a pig. (Laughter.) Yes. (Applause.) And it doesn't work.

That's quite the perceptive quote in light of Hairgate here.

(I forgot the SNIP marks, but the quote was snippy enough without them.)

126. Laura's haircut
Stop & think a minute!......................................... It's called "trickle down"! Laura helped pay for my new tires & tie rods, so I could go visit my Grandkids, & practice "family values". Sally is one of my son-in law's, clients. Barbara Walters was right... ( the price went up $100. since the NY Times article in November.
( Probably to cover the cost of the train to DC!? )
She could have outsourced the job to India you know!
This is the way America "used to work" only there was more for us & less for them!
