"There won't be a draft because Pres. Bush said there won't be a draft"

This is frequently the core of the counter-argument that I run into when conservatives who dispute that there will be a draft. Their logic is that Bush said there will be a draft, therefore, there will be no draft. The notion that he is either lying or has no intention of keeping that promise is not even part of the equation. We're just supposed to accept as fact that there will be no draft because the president says so.

I am documenting and cataloging all of these conversations with Bushbots about the draft. While it will be a very somber day when the draft is ultimately reimplemented, I look forward to the chance to gloat to these people once the draft is reintroduced. Then I can say a big, fat, sneering "I TOLD YOU SO" to them.

"So I don't worry about, and people shouldn't
worry about a draft. . . I think we're in good
shape, I really do. And, if not, we'll -- I'll address
the nation. But I don't see any need to right now."
— G. W. Bush

2. Here's how they're going to do it.
I think that very soon, the military is going to start dangling money out there that is just enough to get a lot of kids to sign up.
This way, they can keep 'em coming for a while without a draft.

9. I believe you're right.....
Economic depression always swells the ranks of the military.

The other way is through the criminal justice system.
In the 60s we had a saying: "10 in the pen, or 4 in the corps".

10. That's what I mean.
They could create any number of situations where young people will see no alternative to going into the military. A draft without calling it a draft.
And I'd bet a lot of these kids will be from "red" states, where no-
one will question a thing, out of patriotism.

3. Yes, but they'll get around it by calling it something like...
Randomly Drawn Mandatory Military Call-Up of Those Registered With Selective Service.

But it won't be a "draft"

5. I guess that explains the shitload of WMD we just found
Because, after all, Bush said they were there. So, I knew deep down that they were there, all along.

Of course, during the campaign, I seem to remember Bush expressly stating that his plan wasn't to "Privatize" Social Security. He and the press even attacked Democrats whenever they used the P word.

But now, that's all you hear. From the left, the right, Bush, the press. "Privatize."

7. He also said there were WMDs.
Plus any number of easily-demonstrable lies.
