Share your thoughts on Oprah's show...
I'll start with my rant--

For the most part, I like Oprah and give her major credit for all that she has done and tried to do. But sometimes her show just irritates the hell out of me. X(

While it could be inferred that she means well and is trying to bring attention to the causes of people in other countries, what about America? What about the horrors that are happening right here? What about another stolen election? A govt. that is trying to take people's basic rights' away? Etc., etc., etc.

I just had my fill when Lisa Ling today told Oprah that her's is the only show that would bring any attention to the issue of the women being raped in the Congo. I am sorry these women are being attacked and raped in front of their families. I really am. It is a horrible atrocity. But I am equally outraged and sad that a show in MY country spends more time showing these sort of things and kissing celebrities asses than it does bringing her demographic some stories that affect them RIGHT HERE!!!

Sure, her hands may be tied to a degree considering it is msm and a public network ABC. But it still pisses me off. How much does anyone expect me to weep for what's going on over there when so much here is just being ignored by them (msm) and Oprah is part of that.

Sorry if this sounds egocentric or ethnocentric at all. It is not my intent to say 'let's ignore the ills of the world.' I don't mean that at all. But I'd be more moved by such a story if I felt that issues that are occuring HERE are getting any equal time--and they don't.

Rant over--

Anyone else?

I've cried right along with her and audience members when she makes the presentations and donations on behalf of Angel network.

Hi Beaverhausen! :hi:
Good to see you!

2. Don't trash Oprah
She brings news of both local and international to a broad audience. She presents issues in a manner that her audience can relate to. Sure the news covers the atrocities being committed in the Sudan, but it rarely registers with the general public. She also puts her money where her mouth is.

I was more ticked off when she gave new cars to everyone in the audience. It was such good publicity for the automaker. But such action does increase her audience and their exposure to some important stuff.

4. I don't think I was trashing her--
if you read my post I acknowledge the good she does and has done. I am entitled to be disgruntled by some of what I feel she does not do, with the tremendous voice she has.

You are of course entitled to disagree with me.

Oh and Welcome to DU! :hi:

7. I think it was a good show
people need to know that predators are preying on the children orphaned by the tsunami and that women are being raped and abused in the Congo and about the millions that have died there.

That said, while I love Oprah, I could really do without her frivoulous fashion shows and some of the other airy shows she likes to do. I am a bit annoyed that she hasn't highlighted issues that are important to me, like how the drug companies have poisoned many people with their practices or the election fraud in Ohio which is important to many of us here on DU. I think she tends to play it safe and raise awareness on topics that are not controversial in this country because she doesn't want the hassle, headaches or lawsuits that that kind of show would give her. Remember the beef industry court case she was involved in? She's played it safe ever since. Sad, but true.

10. Good point--I had forgotten about the beef industry thing.
I bet you are right in that she's played it safe since that big mess.

I agree that today's show was important and a good one. Did you hear it when they said some creep had offered $10,000 to have sex with a five month old? That made me cry... :(

I would also love to see more coverage on her show of the pharmaceutical industry and such--or the way some were intimidated when they tried to vote in Ohio. But I'm sure the pharm industry would try to bury her if she went near that one.

I understand your irritation w/the fashion shows and such. I get very annoyed by the fact that she says that the country is obsessed with celebrities and she finds it a disturbing trend--YET she turns around and fawns all over some of them when they are on her show. Hello?! Is that NOT a contradiction in terms?

Ah well, I have to keep in mind, she is human just like the rest of us. There's only so much she can do--and she DOES do a lot of good.

8. I still say Oprah helped Bush get elected in 2000.
Having Bush on her show was the worst possible thing she could have done. Yeah, I know, she was just trying to give equal time, since she also had Gore on as well. And she couldn't have possibly known what rat bastard scoundrels he, Cheney and Rove would all turn out to be.

Nevertheless, Bush has done more these past four years to undermine so many of the stories and positive causes that she has tried to shed light upon. Just look at all the death and destruction he and his administration have caused in Iraq alone. I wonder if she has any regret now for bringing him on her show?

9. I didn't know that she did this--
thank you for sharing this (that shrub was on her show). I wonder if she regrets it, too.

I was quite upset that she had Shwarzennegger on w/her good buddy Maria Shriver, when he was running for Gov. of California. I feel that her having him on totally swung some votes his way--the many women out there that trust ANYTHING Oprah says or does.

The least she could have done was to also have Gov. Davis on or some of the other candidates. I'm still pissed about that!
