Cheney's better overcoat
After showing up dressed like a slob at Auschwitz, Cheney later appeared in a dignified, dark overcoat - proving that he does indeed own one.

Why couldn't he wear the dignified overcoat to the Auschwitz ceremony?

And there are better looking hats to keep his thin little scalp warm; of course, the ski hat did cover his pointed little head somewhat. If he's too sick to be cold for one afternoon, he shouldn't be presi.....oops....I mean vice president.

6. I would never miss an opportunity to rip Cheney but I agree with you
that weather looks darn cold. I would be wearing whatever I could to stay warm.

And even for a heartless bastard like Cheney, going to such a somber memorial in the dead of winter can't possibly be anything but a depressingly sad experience. Something about the way he is sitting makes me think maybe, just maybe, the old ghosts made him feel extra cold as he sat there. Time for some soul searching. Hope it did him some good.

And if he catches pneumonia, it's no skin off my nose.

Really, OLD MEN NEED TO BE CAREFUL. THEY'RE OLD.

It's not as if this was a short ceremony. It went on for quite a while. This was not a slap in the face to any holocaust survivor.

Washington was freezing on January 20. He was sitting outside for hours, and he looked presentable.

The questions I'm asking are, what message is he sending Europe with this disgrace, and why now?

"He's been dying of the same heart attack for years."

Above: great line from "The Godfather II", in which it was said of the gangster Hyman Roth. It also applies to Cheney.

27. Are you joking?
He's at Auschwitz. An hour in the cold with a formal overcoat is nothing compared to what people there went through. It's less than nothing. An hour's mild discomfort there is not even worth noting.

If anything, it would have given him a chance to contemplate what suffering others went through, either those who were imprisoned there, or the vets who freed them - despite there being snow on the ground and them not having fancy parkas.

They also make plain black hats. They also sell wool lined dress pants. They also sell very nice dress boots that are extremley warm.

There is no excuse for his bad behavoir. It was poor taste. This man has been in public office for over thirty years. He knows how to dress. Quit it with the bad heart shit. It's a poor excuse.

Certainly he knows what attire is approriate for this type of event.

If he thought what he was wearing was appropriate, perhaps he needs a neuro evaluation to determine whether he is becoming senile, or perhaps he is being unduly affected by his meds, or has inadequate blood flow to the brain.

If he knew it was not appropriate and wore it anyway, what exactly was he trying to communicate? And to whom?

Either way, the idea that this guy is a heartbeat away from the Presidency is pretty terrifying. Bush/Cheney- talk about a Hobson's choice.

Poor old grandpa Dick... he just wanted to be warm for a few more moments... the grave is a very cold place, and he doesn't have long before he's there...

Okay, I'm over it. Back to wishing that s.o.b. dead. Hey, look: if the U.S. can say things like, "the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan actually saved untold thousands of lives", then I can say that Cheney's demise would certainly save untold numbers of lives. And may he rot in hell.

44. Stop defending that prick.
There are warm coats available that are perfectly suitable for a dignified event such as this. You know it, I know it, everyone here knows it and Dick Cheney sure as fuck knew it.

Cheney's attire was deliberate. It was insulting and provocative and made a mockery of that solemn occasion.

22. It is worth noting that the other men are wearing hats, too. OTOH,

with his money, I think Cheney could have purchased several layers of warm underclothes to boost the cold resistance of a dress overcoat and perhaps been just as warm. I think he could have found a dressier hat that would be as warm, though he probably didn't want to go with the Russian-style fur hat for political reasons. You'd think a guy "from" Wyoming would have more clothes for cold weather. We know he goes hunting, so he's got the clothes for that. . . I can identify with being really cold in Europe, so cold you can hardly breathe, but then again I don't go duck hunting in Wyoming!

If Cheney can't take the heat -- er, cold -- maybe they shouldn't send him to funerals and other solemn ceremonies in winter.

31. Was he raised by wolves?
Cause he's now the VP of the United States and there is such a thing as protocol and showing respect. My grandfather knew how to dress. And I imagine the weather in Germany wasn't much colder than Chicago in January. When the wind comes off that lake, it's brutal. My grandfather had a long, bright red wool greatcoat he bought in Canada. He wore that coat with a black Russian style hat.
People remembered my grandfather.

Anyway, when a man shows such a lack of respect and lack of decorum, people usually say, "I bet a tour in the military would straighten him out!" And, hey, it's often true: many a lousy-dressing young fool has had his appearance and demeanor improved by a stint in the armed forces.

So.... when and where do we sign him up?
