Here is a concept that is based entirely on religious overtones and one that we have yet to hear Bushco spout incessantly about.

Sunday. Sunday is a day of worship. It is a day to reflect. Retail outlets have no business being OPEN FOR BUSINESS on Sundays. Take that and smoke it Mr. Walton!

We see family values being eroded with less quality time spent together as a unit. The 24/7 corporate buy, buy buy blitz is hurting American values....and Sunday is a simple way to reinforce the family unit. Sundays should be off limits to retailers.

That's the most self-centered view I've ever heard. He was posing a hypothetical situation to ruffle the feathers of the Repukes!!

Ruffling republican feathers is a childish thing to do. Winning elections seems to make more sense to me, and this is a silly, silly concept.
He said "what do you think", and I told him. I doubt I'm the only person here who agrees.

You know, Joe Kennedy would be laughing at us. He really would.

Joe would have looked at the current electoral landscape and said, "The Dems are pussies!"

Then he would have either become a Republican or simply bought Tennessee and North Carolina and sold the land to people who promised to vote for only Democrats.

We have someone coming up with a childish idea that's not only stupid but impractical.

I own a business thats open on sunday and I employee 5 people. What do I tell them ?

and no one was open on Sunday - your staff would be employed evenings to offset the time lost.

Wasn't that long ago, in the city that I live in - Sundays were strictly off limits in regards to being open. It wasn't until the Big Boxes arrival, that the times open have been eroded. In fact - Wednesdays were often closed too.

But we are a vacation destination. I would love sundays off.

How about we all just stay away from the big box shops on Sunday ?

In Massachusetts and Maine before Sunday retail was allowed, many mom & pops were allowed to open as were certain other types of businesses especially in tourist areas. I remember that many small businesses were opposed to Sunday retail because it was their best day given the lack of competition.

I don't believe in legislating away the option to be open on Sunday, but I think we would be better off as a culture if there were regularly scheduled quiet times. Of course, using Sunday retail as a wedge issue is fine with me.

My grandparents never did any shopping on Sunday though. Though they did go out to dinner. I never understood the difference.

By the way, Chick-Fila is not open on Sundays for this reason.

Orthodox Jews, Muslims, Seventh-Day Adventists, Seventh-Day Baptists, members of the World Wide Church of God and others who don't observe the first-day Sabbath.

Observance Society, I still see this as a 'good' thing.

I travel to France at least twice a year, and except for some pharmacies and the occasional store in the larger cities, most everything is closed, except for restaurants and bakeries - and they stagger their closed days.

Why should everything be open, all the time? Where does it say that all of us need to be able to buy things 24 hours a day? Sure, it can be a little inconvenient, but it might be a good idea to close on Sunday, or Monday, or any one day of the week.

Hell, I close my business down for 3 weeks a year, and next year it's going to be four. My clients know, and deal with it, and if they go to the competition, they still come back to me.

I guess Unitarians are the only people God trust enough to be out of his sight for 3 months.

We have blue laws here. I can go to a restaurant and buy alcohol, but I can't get it at the grocery on Sunday's.

In Louisville, they had a weird blue law. You could buy booze at the bars, but retail stores were not opened. You couldn't buy milk for your kids, but you could buy a pitcher of beer.

in Wilmington, DE closed in the summer. Liked that idea a lot.

And so, you give them beer on Sunday, that way you all have a day of rest. My English mother-in-law (ex) always used to say if a kid was acting up, "Why don't you give him a little gin? Keep him quiet for an hour or two."

the towel is tied off and a couple drops of gin or bourbon is put on the sugar. This is given to the baby to suck on.

Dubya should be behind something like this, what with his being a "good Christian" and all. It's all about "family values", right? Plus it would be a great way to piss off the corporate heads. Pit religion and "family values" against corporate greed and see who wins.

I'm an atheist so there's no religious aspect in it for me but I'd be all for a bill that proposed Sunday closings, mainly because it would be fun to see Dubya squirm a bit. I think we all know that the bill would never fly but it would still be fun to get the fundies all up in arms about it. When Dubya sides with the corporations, maybe they'll catch on. I kind of doubt it, but it would be fun to watch all the same.

Thanks. I get so tired of hearing how we liberals are so morally bankrupt - how our ideals hurt America, erode the family unit with gay rights, and pro choice ideals. I get so very very tired of it. so, wondered what kind of issue would pit religious groups against Corporate America - exposing their hypocrisy.

And so Sunday resonates with me - for several reasons. I watched our city erode after the big boxes arrived. I watched good paying full time jobs be replaced with low paying part time jobs 24/7 hours per day every day. I watched small Mom and Pop operations struggle to compete only to sadly shut down when they could not afford to be open for the same amount of hours as the big boys.

I do think with the right framing - this could be a good wedge issue. Put convenience aside...it is good for your family...it is good for your own self being....it is good for your community.

And most of all - Corporate America will HATE IT! Heaven forbid that the rat race slow down one day a week......

Just my two cents worth.

It would be a win-win situation. If Dubya doesn't go along, the fundies would go nuts. If, and this is a really big IF, the bill were to pass, the corporations would be up in arms. Either way, we win.

Whenever I shop on a weekend,I always feel bad for the cashier ringing up my purchases. He/she gets paid squat, probably has few, if any, benefits, and has to work on weekends on top of it all. Plus it might be good for the smaller stores that, as you said, struggle to compete because they can't be open 24/7 like the big box stores. If all the stores are closed, the people running the Mom and Pop operations can have the day off without having to worry about how much business they might be losing to the competition.

Since the corporations would be dead set against something like this, you know which side Dubya would take. Yeah, I'd most definitely be willing to put up with the inconvenience of not being able to shop on Sundays to see this all come to a head. And hey, that's a bit of a sacrifice for me because I usually buy my groceries Sunday mornings. It's the best time to shop because the stores aren't crowded since everyone else is in church. ;)
