Islam is the Right-wings New Bogeyman.
Where's Joe McCarthy when you need him?

Islamists have penetrated U.S. prisons, law enforcement, and armed forces

September 29, 2003
By Daniel Pipes

THE news last week that two Muslim military personnel, James Yee and Ahmad al-Halabi, had been arrested on suspicion of aiding Al-Qaeda prisoners at Guantnamo Bay (with another three Muslim servicemen under watch) seemed to prompt much surprise. It should not have.

It has been obvious for months that Islamists who despise America have penetrated U.S. prisons, law enforcement, and armed forces. In February, a milestone Wall Street Journal article established that imams who consider Osama bin Laden "a hero of Allah" dominate the Islamic chaplaincy in the New York state prison system.

In March, I documented the case of FBI Special Agent Gamal Abdel-Hafiz: His superiors not only overlooked this immigrant's pattern of pro-Islamist behavior, they promoted him.

The right-wing needs an enemy. It can't survive without one. Their fear-mongering only works if people have someone to fear. Yesterday, it was the godless commies. But now, they have a new enemy, but this one isn't godless.

1. Interesting article but...
...the "Islam is the Right-wings New Bogeyman" part is old news.

2. New?? It's been their bogeyman since the early 90's
Articles in Foreign Affairs, etc. have discussed the issue of the "Green Threat" or "Green Peril" since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

A true self-fulfilling prophecy-- these idiots have set about the attack attack attack.

Daniel Pipes and his vile www.campus-watch.org are just part of the process.

Asshole in Chief appt him as a member of the Council of Peace etc. after the Senate denied him...

Pipes is just wrong.

5. No, I disagree.

In the early 90's, the enemy was still communism. Then it became liberalism and we had the Clinton witchhunt.

I've never read an article which so blatantly reminded me of the anti-communist rantings of the 1950's. Just read this line:

"Islamists who despise America have penetrated U.S. prisons, law enforcement, and armed forces."

You could almost have pulled that directly from the McCarthy hearings.

Or how about this jewel:

"Suspending presently employed Muslim personnel who got their jobs through those institutions until their loyalty can be confirmed. "

Shit yeah. Nothing like suspending the rights of all Muslims until they can prove their innocence.

6. We can agree to disagree
I am referring to articles by Benjamin Barber, Jihad v. McWorld from Atlantic Monthly, as well as those by John Esposito--

many of these date from the early 90's--that's all.

They wanted us to go from fearing a red under every bed, to a green under every bed ("they" meaning the policy wonks, not the articles' authors-for the most part.)

Pipes is vile.

3. You didn't see that coming?
Pipes is just ripping off his old man's paranoid Red Menace huckstering and repackaging it as the Islamic Menace.

They were in a funk for years after the Soviets went away. They tried the War on Some Drugs and that didn't work worth a damn. Now they have the War on Some Terrorists and people largely seem to buy into it.

4. I would think that if you read this closely it is more racist
than anti-islamic. Count the number of "african-americans" or Black Muslims. The references to "the prison system" would also indicate a Black Muslim bias. Old hatreds with a new twist ... foreign rather than homegrown "terrism". If you can link Black Muslims to foreign Muslims, maybe we can lock them all up in Gitmo.

7. it's Pipes--he means it as anti-Islamic
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 02:26 PM by Aidoneus
That's his kick. A poster above beat me to it, he's carrying on his fathers' work but with "The Russians Are Coming!" replaced with Muslimeenhass to adapt to the new "menace".

8. yes and no
in the long view our right wing converges with fundamentalist Islam on church as state, women's rights, the overall direction of civilization. If Ashcroft has any agenda in suppressing Islam, it's to promote a different brand. The bogeymen to both sides are liberals, women, gays, sometimes Jews.

9.  Well said, foo
I can't express how fed up I am with all of these fools
and their manic desire to force their agendas on the world.

According to the Weather Channel, Yellowstone's been
kicking up this past month. Possibly Mother Nature/Earth
will do a 100% thorough job this time.
