Any word on the Audubon Zoo?
Yes, I know this is a People-First story, but someone's else's post here brought the zoo to mind.

Has there been any word on the zoo animals?

4. Here's some word from Ron Forman, Pres/CEO of Audubon Nature Institute
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nationworld/bal-te.neworleans30aug30,1,5586970.story?coll=bal-nationworld-headlines

This story was filed about 15-20 hours ago.

Forman, president and chief executive of the Audubon Nature Institute, was happy his charges stayed inside. He oversees the Audubon Zoo, the aquarium and other facilities, which he said fared well in the storm.

A few flamingos died, but he said there was little other loss of animal life.

Hope this is of some assistance!

6. What do you mean, "will they bother"?
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 07:30 PM by theHandpuppet
Y'know, I do think emergency personnel have a few other things on their plate right now. They can't even feed the kids in the city or rescue everyone. Let's keep this in perspective. I'm sure they would help if they could.

Hurricane Update
This is what we know about the status of AZA member institutions in the affected area as of noon, August 30.

Audubon Nature Institute
The staff of the Audubon Nature Institute is safe. The physical plants at both the Zoo and the Aquarium suffered little damage. The staff will continue to assess the impact on the animal collections at all the Audubon facilities.

The staff at the Audubon Nature Institute appreciates the outpouring of prayers and offers to help from their Zoo and Aquarium colleagues. As AZA obtains updated information about the status of the Audubon Nature Institute facilities and what they need, we will keep you apprised.

BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo
The Zoo has no electricity, there are lots of trees down, but there were no animal losses. They are already working on clean up.

Alexandria Zoo
No information. Message left with Leslie Whitt, Director.

Jackson Zoo
The Zoo suffered very slight building damage and has about 35 trees down. There was no injury to any staff or animals. About half of the zoo has power. They will be closed for about a week while they clean up the trees.

Birmingham Zoo

12. The zoo is the high point in the city so the animals may be
safer than anyone else tonight.
