Council decries Patriot Act in watered-down resolution

Warning of civil liberties abuses similar to those that preceded the Holocaust, the City Council on Wednesday approved a watered-down resolution urging repeal of portions of the USA Patriot Act.

The 37-7 vote followed an emotional debate that invoked the chilling words of Nazi leader Hermann Goering and ignored Mayor Daley's warning that the federal government needs extraordinary tools to fight terrorism.

"The Patriot Act was passed because of 9/11. When some building blows up, are you gonna go see the alderman?" said Daley, a former prosecutor.

"Terrorists don't understand civil rights. If they did, they would have never bombed the World Trade Center. ... If there's a situation they say the federal government has violated civil rights, then let's hear from them. But ... let's not prejudge this law unless something has taken place."

Then perhaps we have some terrorists in our midst. There seem to be quite a few people in our government who don't understand civil rights. Killing innocent Iraqi people in order to get some bad guys is not what I would consider upholding civil rights. Arresting people for wearing a T-shirt with a peace sign is not exactly upholding civil rights (yes, this happened in the US). As Vonnegut would say, "And so on."

Democrat in Name Only, IMHO. What else can I say?

He's really a legacied maverick who runs the city like a fifedom. It's efficient, and the city is well run, so probably best not to mess with success. But, i think his principles are rooted in municipal efficiency and not in Dem or Repub platforms.

He did, btw, put considerable political muscle behind Rod B in his race for gov. So, i think it's a bit more than name only.

It's still all about clout. But my property taxes are going sky high and it is almost impossible to get the city to plant trees on my street. They can spend millions of dollars on Soldier Field and Millennium Park (not to mention whatever they will spend on Meigs Field), but my neighborhood had to raise $1 million to renovate the nearest playlot. The friend in charge of the effort also had to strongarm the alderman and state representative into donating.

The patronage deals with rich cronies like the Duffs are sleazy, though business as usual with the Daley clan. Can't Harold Washington be reincarnated?

Also, I am not impressed with Blagoevich. I wrote in Paul Vallas' name last November.
