Thanks a lot Oprah
If Arnold is "elected" with a smaller majority of voters
than will vote to keep Davis in office, we can in part
thank Oprah.

Many supporters refused to believe the charges, even after their man admitted to boorish behavior.

"I don't think Maria would have let him get away with anything. The Kennedy clan would have rubbed him out if he treated her that way," said Theresa Moore, 49, a teacher from Spring Valley who brought a sign saying "smart chicks vote for Arnold."

"And anyway," she added, "I saw on 'Oprah' how he brings her coffee every morning!"

1. Yes, in the minds of smart chicks,
bringing your wife coffee negates sexual harrassment. I'm so proud to live in this country! We're number one, we're number one...

2. He brings her coffee
every morning out of GUILT for all the womanizing he was caught doing! Some Americans are just plain stoooopid!

4. Just one of many
Pandering to Arnold

I was so disappointed to see Oprah fawning over Arnold and Maria. What about the rest of the candidates? She has no right to try and influence the result of our recall election. He is not qualified to be our governor. Oprah is now no different than other so-called celebrities trying to add their clout to something they have no business meddling in. Arnold comes across as a controlling, sexist male. I have lost all faith in Oprah and her shows. Are they all staged like this one was?

6. My question to gunnar1514 would be...
...do you have the same reaction to celebrities who support Liberal and Democratic candidates?

8. Pray tell what shows around put Liberal candidates on exclusively?
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 07:34 AM by Woodstock
I want to watch that show. All I see is shows putting on candidates of both sides, or the conservative side (as in Oprah's case.) It's nowhere near as simplistic as you are making it out. Oprah gained fame as someone who would support a decent family man with experience governing rather than a sexist pig in bed with corporations. To her fans, it's a slap in the face. If Jon Stewart suddenly started supporting George Bush for president, trust me, there would be lots of gunnars saying similar things, and lots of people tuning out. Shows attract audiences for a reason. People feel betrayed by Oprah. Oprah can be a "celebrity who suports conservative candidates" and that's fine. But she needs to be up front about it, and using her show that consists mainly of people who don't like it to influence the race isn't cricket.

10. Your post has vanishingly little...
...to do with mine.

So I'll ask again. Does the person in question feel the same way about liberal celebrities trying to influance elections in favor of liberal candidates.

You may come from whereever you want to come from. However, complaining about conservative celebraties supporting thier candidates while lauding liberal one for supporting theirs is hypocrasy. Hence the reason for my original question to gunnar. It had nothing to do with wether or not there was a better candidate than Arnie. It's fairly obvious that there is.

13. Your post has "vanishingly little" to do with gunnar's
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 07:41 AM by Woodstock
I'm explaining where gunnar is coming from. I've read many of the comments on Oprah's board, and that is where they are coming from.

You want to throw in a red herring by grabbing onto the one thing in his message he said that you can pick apart, that's your choice. The fact is, he feels betrayed. They all feel betrayed.

14. No, I took the one post presented here.

Personally I give a rats ass what Oprah says. So her viewers feel betrayed. Mayeb they'll start thinking for themselves more. I'm hoping the same thing happens with Rush's listeners. I don't hold out a lot of hope for either camp.

My original question still stands. It has a great deal to do with the statement made by gunnar. Similar statements, which are just as hypocritical, have been made by a great many people both conservative and liberal.

15. She did the same with Dubya
They showed that pre-Election interview in 2000, here it the UK.
It was smarmy, cosy and allowed Dubya to come across as a simple, friendly, everyday man who likes Tacos and loves his children.
Really sickening and just right to make people believe he was a compassionate man.
Oprah, who used has a show that dealt with peoples problem including lives destroyed by alcoholism, did not challenge that idea that someone with a heavy drinking problem can just get up one day and never drink again. No help, no detoxic, just help from the Lord.

Until then I had always thought she was a Democrat, so fawning over Arnie does not suprise me. She will gain a powerful friend, should he get elected.

17. In fairness
She gave Al Gore the same opportunity. While I would prefer that she had stuck to her 20+ year decision not to have campaigning politicians on her show, in 2000 she hosted both candidates.

This time around, she went for the "get" rather than doing what was right.

I wasn't a fan, but caught the show from to time. But lost an enormous amount of respect for her and will never watch the show again.

9. OK, so borish behavior towards woman is now a disqualifier
for holding public office????? Sound familiar? Arney is not qualified because he's an idiot movie actor, who knows nothing about running a state. This is going to be a disaster for Califonians and a power grab by the Bushies.
But I am really getting sick of the way Gray Davis campaigns, he is the king of politics of personal distruction. Why can't he run on his Democratic values and his record, and not on Arnolds bad behavior 20 and 30 years ago. IMHO, Davis is handing Cali to the repukes, and should be run out of the Democratic party for it!

11. The propaganda machine is alive and well
"20 to 30 years ago"?
Sorry but thats the Republican Party line. Some of Ahnold's bad behavior has been quite recent. The "oh, that old thing" defense won't work with thinking people.

12. It wasn't 20 years ago, it was this year
The remark about how great it was to have the chance to put a woman's head in the toilet was this year. The implication he wanted to do the same with Ariana was this year. One groping incident was 2000, two others the late nineties, and if you believe these are the only ones, I have some ocean front property in Iowa to sell you. Arnold has a pattern of saying sexist things/treating women like pieces of meat that continues to this day. If that doesn't bother you, it should.

Melanie Sykes and Anna Richardson are currently in their thirties, so
the assults on them were recent and public too. They were not consenual either.

18. Politics of personal destruction
I suggest Captain, before you get outed on the DU board,
that you google Arnie's ads in this race. All lies, no
substantive ideas to raise revenues (and that's what it
is going to take to pay off the CA debts) and frankly
a pretty good smear campaign of his own.

The only Gray Davis ad out there....and it's actually
a No on the Recall ad just quotes news sources about
Arnie...the fact that Arnie hasn't voted in the last
13 of 21 races...that he didn't debate unless the
questions were given to him....

I suggest you do some homework first.

19. Arianna on Democracy Now
pointed out that it WASN"T the Democrats or Davis orchestrating all this against Sch.

Much of it was generated because Arnie was so high in the "polls" and people realized that this was their last chance to get information out there that they had had for years, in order to prevent his election.

20. The neo-cons picked the playing field
Wouldn't it be great if campaigns were based on issues? However, while the Dems discuss issues, the repukes sling mud. The only thing the Dems get out of that is....dirty. You can't win unless you're on a level playing field. When Nice plays against Nasty, guess who wins?
