Umberto Eco on how Fascist governments always lose wars
"Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy."

1. fact.
a simple belief in their own superiority proves to be their undoing, as they continuously underestimate their opposition—well past the point when they have that luxury.

3. Thank you for this piece
I hesitate to say it, enjoyed, reading this piece. Great post that needs much further contemplation, and I'm now too tired to get the words in any ...yawn...sensible order. Correct, backspace, insert, back sapce...

4. Thanks! I lost this when I lost my bookmarks & it's good to have

it back. Reality Macedonia looks like an interesting site to explore, too. (My old link to Eco's essay was at another site.)

More widom from Eco (sound familiar?):

"To people who feel deprived of a clear social identity, Ur-Fascism says that their only privilege is the most common one, to be born in the same country. This is the origin of nationalism. Besides, the only ones who can provide an identity to the nation are its enemies. Thus at the root of the Ur-Fascist psychology there is the obsession with a plot, possibly an international one. The followers must feel besieged. The easiest way to solve the plot is the appeal to xenophobia. . ."
