We need all the help we can get to rid the nation of the bu$h reich.
You are not doing any good for the nation or the world by taking a vote from the dem.

I wouldnt say that more like an opposition party.
He in election 2000 worked hard for Al Gore maybe because Dennis wants these greens back in the party. I have green like politics, I id myself as a democrat but I could support Kerry very easily. Nader had good things to say about Kerry btw too. Do you want the greens to vote green again? Kucinich wants these voters back in the party, and so do I. I easily could support Kerry. Despite IWR hes pretty damned liberal.

49. Personally...
I want them back in the party. Kucinich can bring them back into the party.

Nader had a far better platform than Gore, and would have been a far better president, IMO. However, I supported and would support again Gore, because unity is sometimes required when fighting right-wingers.

Please, please Greens, don't do it again. I supported Nader in 1996, but not in 2000 because the election was too close and too important. Now that we have chimpy certainly you can see how important it is. If the Green candidate has a chance to win, I will support. Otherwise, don't let the repugs ruin us any further, please! like the fascist regime we affectionately refer to as the BFEE. Sad to know there are so many narrow-minded, my-way-or-no-way, fine-I'll-take-my-ball-and-go-home folks among us. IMO another Bush term would result in the deaths of countless innocents and endless needless suffering--among other things.

I'm not a troll, but I'm undecided on Kerry as a choice for now, lots of reasons which I can go into, I trust him about as far as I can throw him, which isn't far. So, I don't know what I would do, which is what the "Other" option is.

Probably write in Dean or Clark...I just don't trust Kerry...his debate performances and statements and records on Iraq the war did it for me... I made a decision last January not to vote for any candidate that supported the Iraq war and I'm sticking by my pledge.

A swing state voter who makes a protest vote is someone I might try to thoughtfully, respectfully persuade to vote dem.

But it rubs me the wrong way to just shoot down someone's vote. We all have the right to decide who to vote for individually. It's the people who don't vote at all who really hurt us more than those who don't vote the way we would vote.

41. I'd need to look into it a little more
I've heard too much about the Skull And Bones and the Kerry fortune to want to throw my support behind him without knowing more. Plus, he voted in favor of the war resolution. If Dennis Kucinich doesn't make it, I'll have to get serious in my research. I think, though, that when a lot of the electorate hears DK's message and takes a good look at his actions, I'm going to be pretty happy with the choices I have.

I have to be pragmatic here. I want a Democrat in the White House... I don't want Bush to get back in by default.

I'd rather not be pushed into a situation where I have to choose between the lesser of two evils. I'd prefer to vote for the candidate I most agree with. But if the choice is between A. Bush B. A Democrat who can beat Bush or C. a third-party candidate I really agree with but who doesn't appear to have a chance of winning...

I will pick B.

59. My friend Walter's Grandma Tippy said I was a good Democrat...
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 06:09 PM by rbnyc
...because I told her, as I've said again and again, that I believe primary elections are the time to voice your hopes for the direction of the party, and the general elections are the time to just vote for the Democrat.

That said, I can understand why someone would decide to vote Green. While I probably wouldn't make that choice, I do believe that it's important to attempt to broaden the political spectrum, that a healthy democracy can support more that 2 parties, etc.

What I cannot understand, besides why anyone would vote for Bush, is why anyone would stay home. Go to the polls and write in "Blow Me!" or vote for someone who could never win. That's at least saying something. But to stay home! I just don't get it. Is there anyone who voted that they would stay home that can help me understand how this choice is rooted in any kind of concern for our communities?

EDIT: typo

68. I agree!
This is not the election in which to validate a third party, at least not in the Presidential race. It might be nice if some Greens showed up in Congress, though, like maybe one to take Bob Graham's seat for Florida.

Primaries are where the people (remember? that's us!) voice our opinion on who should represent our party and, hopefully, our country. (OOPS! Nobody told Bush he was representing us, did they?) The general election is where we evict the pretender from his throne.

Yes, I'd vote for Kerry. I'd vote for any Democrat in hopes that we can muster more votes than the Republicans.

Stay home? That's a vote against your candidate even if you don't really have one.

Did I ever tell you about the time your grandfather stayed home? He said that one vote wouldn't count and he was tired. (He was pushing 80.) The election for Mayor came in a dead tie. Three recounts couldn't sway the vote. The City charter called for a coin toss in case of a tie. The incumbent, and Dad's choice for Mayor had he voted, said she wouldn't accept the job on the toss of a coin and withdrew. One vote does count.

On the other hand, I went out early that November morning in 2000 (or was it after work?) to cast my straight Democratic vote and incur the ire of some natives on referendums (referendi? ;-)). I knew my larger half would vote primarily Republican and had no idea how he felt about net bans or off-shore drilling (I oppose all off-shore drilling no matter how close or far away - it just doesn't seem safe, and better to blight the land than the sea with spilled oil). I voted and he got stuck at the office and didn't get the chance. Did it matter? Not a fig! We're in Florida where you can't count on your vote counting.

The sticker I got for voting touch-screen in the last election proudly hangs limply from the dashboard of my van. Do I trust touch-screen voting in Florida? Not any more than I trust the old paper ballot that got Bush selected. My larger half decided to request an absentee ballot for 2004. I may do the same just so I know I leave a paper trail and can keep a photocopy in case it's needed. (I wonder what would happen if the entire country voted by absentee ballot, kept a copy, and was responsible for our own recount.)

I know this is a long post, but I didn't have time to write a short one.

Ma

69. Hi. Nice post. You're too funny.
Nice post, mom. Let me add that to stay home is a vote against yourself. Staying home is like saying to our public servants, "It's okay, you don't have to think about what's best for me. I don't care."

Thanks for sharing that story, too.

61. While I will vote for Kerry,
I doubt I'll volunteer or be as enthusiastic about him as I am for Dean.

62. I will not vote for Lieberman or Clark. Not ever.
Kerry's okay.

I know that my candidates won't get anywhere because they're too good for this country and the people, and the people obviously want corporate rule. So always go for the next best thing if the best can't be used.

63. In the end it's ABB.
My heart belongs to Dean, but I'd still support Kerry if he got the nod. I think he'd make a pretty damn good president to boot.

65. I'd Vote For Kerry In A Heartbeat
He's not my first or second choice... but he's a strong candidate with a Liberal voting record and I would be proud to call him my President.

66. Thing about Democrats
This is actually a paraphrase of Bill Clinton himself for the Tom Harkin Steak Fry.

"The difference between democrats and republicans are when we dig ourselves into a hole, we quit digging."

I'd support any democratic nominee. I figure if we're right and s/he's wrong, s/he'll hit a hole and quit digging.

73. Kerry.
And if Graham is the nominee, I'll vote for Graham.

And if Sharpton, Braun, Gep, or Dean gets the nomination, I'll vote for any of them.

If Edwards gets the nomination I'll vote for him.

Whom did I forget? Oh yes. Lieberman. I'll hold my nose and wear a mask. But I'll vote for him.

The jury is still out on Clark. I like some of what I've heard, but I'm still dealing with that trust issue. And him declaring candidacy as a dem before he even registered as a dem didn't help. As long as I feel reasonably sure that he is not * in dems clothing, I'll cast a vote for him. While looking over my shoulder, in the booth and for the next 4 years.

And if Dennis Kucinich gets the nomination, I'll not only vote for him, I'll party all the way to inauguration.

I really think that this kind of question backfires. I've read it over and over and over for various candidates here at DU. When you ask this kind of question, there are always people who immediately defend their right to abstain. They probably wouldn't, if we could just focus on the ultimate goal...GWB. Right now many of us have candidates that we passionately want to see run against Bush. But in 04, we're all going to work to evict the pretender. Why not acknowledge that we're all on the same page, if not the same paragraph and sentence, where * and '04 is concerned, and move on?

I can't believe that 14% of the people posting here would bail if Kerry were the nominee. That's just INSANE.

Lieberman, I can understand the visceral revulsion. But I'd vote for him with a gasmask on, anyway.

A lot of us were mislead in 2000, thinking that bush* wouldn't be the evil fraudulent dipshit ratfucker that he is. But with three years of hard evidence of the damage bush* has done to this nation, voting for anyone but the Democratic nominee, or not voting at all, is tragic at best. I feel very sorry for those of you who's support of the Democratic effort is conditional, at this point.

Drop the delusion.

Anything is better than bushco and the current crowd of pension molestors.

77. Organism, you are my hero!
I agree with what you said wholeheartedly. Look at the ruin that chimpy has done: environment, civil rights, budget, jobs, international relations, and all the dead and damaged lives. It is a monstrosity what this admin has done. People are suffering. Those who said or thought there was no difference between Gore and Bush are severely wrong wrong wrong. Dropping bombs on people, looting the treasury, mocking civil rights, rigging elections, naming lunatic judges, lying to the public about nearly everything (Clean Air Act is a classic), promoting bigotry, dirty tricks, deception, and totalitarianism... these are not even normal things for a typical repuglican. Please, please come to your senses. We must support whomever gets the Dem nomination. They're all good people; and compared to chimpy, they are angels and geniuses.

81. Clap clap clap...
Twenty-two that would bail on Kerry and basically give the Republicans an easier time is 22 too many. I agree with everything you said, sans the "dipshit ratfucker" which I thought was a bit rash... hehe.

80. Other
I'm not a troll, but I'm undecided on Kerry as a choice for now, lots of reasons which I can go into, I trust him about as far as I can throw him, which isn't far.
