Bush promotes Iraq successes as leak probe surrounds White House

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush sought to promote his administration's successes in war-torn Iraq despite a growing investigation into his staff over the alleged leak of a CIA agent's identity. snip

The president sailed into a growing political storm this week over an alleged White House leak that identified CIA officer Valerie Plame.

It is a federal crime to reveal the identity of a CIA officer. snip

Some observers believe the leak affair has the potential to become a major scandal of a magnitude greater than president Bill Clinton's Whitewater real estate scandal, or the Watergate affair that toppled president Richard Nixon.

10. And the irony is, Whitewater was nothing
but it's what it led to that was the problem.

14. It's about treason
Whatever the reason. And it also damaged our ability to monitor the trafficing of WMDs, which is allegedly the whole reason for the "War on Terrorism". Whoever leaked this information should be in jail, and if Bush and/or Cheney were aware of the leak, they should be impeached.

5. He didn't want to. But he did. That was the beginning of the end
Seemed like everything began unraveling for the Repubs after he admitted to that.

3. I'm still afraid it'll fizzle
Because of the lickspittle press. That's the big differenc with Watergate.

Although it doesn't seem to be fizzling, and the press seems ever so slightly less lickspittle lately. That's hopeful, but I'm afraid to hope too much.

8. I see this as a win-win for us
If the WH cooperates and turns over the guilty parties, that will hurt Bush badly because it's obvious some very high-ranking people are up to their eyeballs in this. And if the WH tries to drag this out and stonewall, the investigation itself becomes a growing political liability for Chimpy.

15. It is REALLY up to the Congressional Dems to prevent that!
Because the media whores could abandon the story in a moment for some sensational BS that might come up. This time, the Dems absolutely can NOT wimp out!!! Sen Shumer is doing a good job so far, pushing for a special counsel, good luck to him!

I think it's imperative that they keep Daschle out of this; he is just the one to suddenly wimp out!!

4. What exactly happened?
From what I gathered, a member of Bush's WH administration leaked the identity of an undercover CIA agent (in Iraq??) to punish her husband's opposition to the president. Details?

11. It's more than that
At least TWO Administration officials revealed the identity of a CIA operative, solely in order to enact political revenge against her husband for blowing the whistle on their lies about the Niger Uranium. The agent in question was not just working on any old thing, she was part of the effort to prevent nuclear officials from getting into the hands of terrorists, so their revelation directly affects national security and negatively impacts the war against terrorism.

And it's already starting to look like there are going to be serious allegations of a White House coverup, since they knew all about the leak back in July, but haven't done anything about it.

I hope they're right. I'd love to see shrub and his gang get what they deserve!

9. Possibly One of the Most Insidious Acts of Treason
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 03:36 PM by Beetwasher
ever committed in this country, that we know about, and it was perpetrated by two Senior Admin. Officials and there's not even an argument about the fact that it did occur. It's only a matter of who did it. Yeah, I'd say that's bigger than Watergate.

12. greater than president Bill Clinton's Whitewater real estate scandal,
Exactly what was the scandal? The Clinton's lost $70,000.00 on their failed real estate venture but nothing was found to be illegal. What exactly was the scandal?

13. The Scandal...
...was one of the first exhibitions of the 8 year hissy fit that the rethuglicans had after Clinton's election refuted their belief that the White House was theirs by devine right.
