BBV: Live, real-time "trouble reports" forum for California recall
Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 12:23 AM by BevHarris
Californians who have concerns or trouble voting can post to the new BBV Reports web site, part of BlackBoxVoting.

This site will go live at 6 p.m. California time tomorrow (Monday) and will remain online until a final resolution is reached. Voters can post problems and discuss voting experiences in real time, and we will have a media arm to send camera crews or notify news reporters if anything is reported (and checked out) that shows voter's rights are being abridged.

Paranoid Pat, I understand, will have a camera crew in Alameda County and some reporters have called me requesting tips as well.

This is not just a reporting site for electronic voting: If you arrive at the polls, and you are registered, but they can't find your registration; if you are impeded in voting in some way; if you see protests, or hear an interesting conversation to help us take the pulse of America on the voting issue, report it.

A word for whoever seems to want to hack out our web sites all the time: When you pulled the dirty tricks that took out BlackBoxVoting.com on Friday, a reporter for a major news outlet was on the site. All it does is draw attention to the issue. I've been fielding press calls all weekend, and new Black Box activists are volunteering all over the place.

And a brief announcement: Chapter 7 is my favorite so far, but it was a mess -- some of the graphics kept corrupting the file, pulling text apart, dropping some text, sticking things in the wrong places. It took most of the day to diagnose the problem (my publishing software imported and upgraded into Plan Nine's publishing software exported into PDF, combined with too many graphics.)

Chapter 7 is simplified, cleaner and a very good read. You can find it at http://www.blackboxvoting.com or http://www.talion.com/blackboxvoting.org.htm.

Now, spread the word to your Californian contacts: Report any and all concerns and anomalies, starting 6 p.m. California time (9 p.m. Eastern) tomorrow, Monday and hop in to see how it's going during Election Day.

http://www.BBVreports.org
The splash page up tomorrow morning, the site goes live tomorrow 6 p.m.

10. Bev - You are a leader among others who care
This is a process, some are slower than others to grasp the extent of what is happening. However I am finding there are others who feel the same way that we do here at DU.

Eventually all will see that our votes are in jeopardy due to electronic voting, and MORE than need to be counted and protected, as our Democracy needs to be.

I am grateful to you and so many others around this country that are working towards ensuring the taking back of our vote.

We all need to work together and focus on the big picture, which is that all votes be counted and included in the Democratic process.

11. Just received this e-mail from Working Assets.com
GET OUT AND VOTE ON TUESDAY, OCT. 7
Working Assets urges Californians to go to the polls on Tuesday
October 7 and cast a vote in the unprecedented gubernatorial recall
election. Citizens who vote will decide who is to lead our state at a
time of acute fiscal crisis and intensifying political chaos. If you
don't vote, someone else with a very different vision for the future
of California may make this crucial decision for you. Please vote, and
help increase turn out by bringing a friend to the polls.

Note: Working Assets does not endorse or oppose candidates for public
office. With people around the globe literally dying for democracy, we
strongly encourage citizens to exercise their right to vote on
election day.

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW TO VOTE
The polls are open statewide from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

For help locating your polling place click on the link below and
access up-to-date information for your county:

http://yourvotematters.workingassets.com/ctt.asp?u=1010626&l=5993

For more information about the ballot, go to the Special Recall
Election Voter Guide from the nonpartisan California Voter Foundation
by clicking on the link below:

http://yourvotematters.workingassets.com/ctt.asp?u=1010626&l=5994

VOTE NO ON WARD CONNERLY'S PROP. 54
Ward Connerly is back with more bad policy for California. Connerly's
Proposition 54 would prevent state agencies from collecting or using
information on race. Connerly calls it the Racial Privacy Initiative.
But Prop. 54 doesn't protect privacy - it legislates ignorance and
undermines guarantees of equal access and equal protection under the
law. There are racial inequalities in healthcare, employment,
education, housing and the courts that won't be solved by turning a
blind eye.

If you want to prevent inequality and injustice in California, make
sure to vote NO on Proposition 54 on October 7.

SPREAD THE WORD
Unfortunately, the recall madness has drowned out the campaign against
Proposition 54. You'd be surprised how many of your friends might not
even know that 54 is on the ballot. You can help stop this destructive
initiative by informing your friends about it. It's easy to let them
know. Just use our Tell Your Friends feature to send them an e-mail
about Connerly's initiative, urging them to vote NO on 54.

If we each motivate one more person to go to the polls and vote NO on
Prop. 54, we'll double our voting power to oppose it. To tell your
friends to vote NO on Prop. 54 click on the link below:

18. Whoa. I had forgotten about Prop. 54.
I hope it goes down to defeat too.

Great job, Bev. I hope you don't get any calls about fraud, but that's not likely. Probably many of the calls will be from naturalized former Mexicans denied their right to vote.I don't put ANYTHING past this administration.

22. Yes -- here's what punch card folks should look for
1) Late opening of the polls -- this has traditionally been a problem in minority districts, the polls open late and those who must go to work lose their opportunity to vote

2) Listen to the conversations, the general tone of discussion

3) See if the punch cards punch through for your candidate. I had an engineer call me from Florida last time to report that you could dislodge Bush votes with a puff of air, but Gore votes would not fully dislodge unless you tore the little chad off.

4) Observe any irregularities in how the vote comes in -- ie. are there too many overvotes? That is one of the easiest ways to disqualify punch cards.

5) Make sure they post the precinct results on your polling place at the end. That is the law in California, and it's very important. For this to have any meaning, though, that report would need to go up BEFORE the punch cards are transported to the county.

Bev

17. Suggestion
Hey Bev,

California is not the only election tomorrow. How about a forum for reporting any and all election irregularities?

23. Well my bad. Where are the other elections? THANKS!
Yes, we'll set up a forum for each state having an election if that's the case. Can someone let me know which states are having elections tomorrow? I need to contact the press.

Bev

27. I don't know about states
I was thinking specifically of my local municipal election, also with DREs and which I intend to monitor.

29. Reminder for folks using Optical Scan and Touch Screens.....
Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 01:26 PM by ParanoidPat
.....Please look at the units you are voting on and see if there are any cables other than the power cord attached to the machines! If you see anything other than a power cord, please ask a poll worker if you can speak to whoever is in charge. Ask for that persons name, and what the extra cables are hooked up to, and report that information and the precinct location and time of day to the California BBV Reporting web site at this address.

http://www.BBVreport.org

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated!
Let's let them know that we're paying attention. :)

Thanks in advance! :kick:

39. And speaking of polls -- there's one on the BBVreport.org site
But I need to see if they'll put the top spot "VOTE NO" on recall -- if not, I think I'll have them take the whole thing off.

We're doing the final tweaks.

45. ..the number of absentee ballots
Hey ParanoidPat- do you think people are getting nervous about auditless voting on touch screens that don't produce a voter-verified paper ballot?

Wow, it would be great to know how many people got the word and are NOT voting on those machines.

Good luck tomorrow!

  :yourock:

46. Please fix the splash page!
I am using Windows 98 and IE5, and I can't bring up the splash page. There are lots more like me out there, and you are turning them away at the gate. Please have someone take a look and FIX THIS.

At the very least, give a link on the intro page that allows visitors to bypass the splash page and get to the rest of the site.

Thanks for all your work, you are something! This is a fantastic idea and I just want to help make it more successful!

48. Citizen Twain's cartoon on Diebold
and the California recall at "Too Stupid to be President" website is a treat, by the way. I think he got one fact wrong on the 26 critical flaws that he attributed to Rubin but was the SAIC judgment. Maybe he needs to read up a bit more? "Plausible electability" was very good.

My take on the machines in CA is that a) the junk can't help but perform oddly even without fraud b) someone, despite the scrutiny may be inclined to forge ahead with unproveable, in-your-face fraud. After all, they must do that in 2004, so why surrender CA to honest chance?

I hope you can do better than they did in 2002. expect people to flood your site with "Democratic" skulduggery. That is what they did to a watchdog site in 2002.
