UN refugee chief's term extended; refuses salary and travel expenses

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Ruud Lubbers, one of the few U.N. officials to have refused a salary, received a two-year extension on Monday as head of the world's largest refugee agency from the 191-member U.N. General Assembly.

Lubbers, 64, who served as Dutch prime minister for 12 years, took over from Japan's Sadako Ogata in January 2001 as the U.N. high commissioner for refugees. The job is usually for five years and the extension ensures he will serve a full term.
