Bush proclaimes Marriage Protection Week, 2003
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/10/20031003-12.html

Marriage is a sacred institution, and its protection is essential to the continued strength of our society. Marriage Protection Week provides an opportunity to focus our efforts on preserving the sanctity of marriage and on building strong and healthy marriages in America.

Marriage is a union between a man and a woman, and my Administration is working to support the institution of marriage by helping couples build successful marriages and be good parents.

To encourage marriage and promote the well-being of children, I have proposed a healthy marriage initiative to help couples develop the skills and knowledge to form and sustain healthy marriages. Research has shown that, on average, children raised in households headed by married parents fare better than children who grow up in other family structures. Through education and counseling programs, faith-based, community, and government organizations promote healthy marriages and a better quality of life for children. By supporting responsible child-rearing and strong families, my Administration is seeking to ensure that every child can grow up in a safe and loving home.

8. It wouldn't have made any difference.
Bush could give two shits about "family values"- look at the family he raised. Any man who valued the sanctity of marriage would have given up on the presidential race when his wife expressed her discomfort with the idea.
He's mouthing the fundy line so they ignore the fact that he went after another man's wife in an act of petty revenge.

9. Who says he didn't ....
I'm sure if one or both of the twins is gay, there is no way in hell they would be able to come out. I'm sure they have been taught that gays are Godless Hethens.

I really feel sorry for the girls.

Cheers

31. Actually, it did
Cheney's position is closer to middle America on this one (ie, the states can decide to institute it whenever they feel like it, and it's not the federal government's job to intervene). He's actually on the record as saying this, which surprised me when I read it.

Needless to say, he isn't allowed to express those views outside all that much.

4. Come now, they always have their prescription drugs
to ease the pain of their loveless marriages.

And, unlike poor people and people with skin pigment, they can do as much prescription drug abusing as they'd like with no fear of the Law at all.

12. You got it ... cause and effect
Shrub believes that a happy family is the result of a good marriage.

It is simply not the case.

A good marriage is the result of a happy family.

I can do this just fine without some moralistic fuckwit's help. Wanna help marriages? Help the working poor.

They never seem to poll sane people in long-term marriages about how *they* feel about gay marriage...

15. while I was looking this up.....here's what Neil's wife, Sharon, said:
She wonders whether Neil, 48, was unfaithful to her throughout their marriage as he has admitted he was at the end. She wonders whether Neil is the father of the baby born to Maria Andrews, the 40-year-old Houston woman he is dating. Sharon wonders why he used e-mail to tell her he was leaving and why he told her by phone months later, "You better move on with your life or you'll find yourself in a back alley."

22. and this is nice, too
Part of his final settlement offer, so far refused by Mrs Bush, was $US1000 ($A1642) maintenance a month. In testimony, Mr Bush was questioned about his business interests, stock holdings, insurance policies and bank accounts. He made $US800,000 in 2000, but denies being a wealthy man.

This is despite having raised between $US23 million and possibly as much as $US40 million for his latest business venture, Ignite, an interactive education software company aimed at helping school students improve their standardised test scores. His efforts to market the product have been questioned in the US media because standardised testing is a Bush Administration initiative, and embraced in Florida, where another Bush brother, Jeb, is governor.

a THOUSAND DOLLARS a MONTH?????

no wonder she met with Kitty Kelly in April......planning a book of her own on that family. Is she still alive?

"You better move on with your life or you'll find yourself in a back alley."

why does stuff like this get NO publicity......none at ALL?

10. Healthy marriages are a good thing, King George, but what
gives you the right to define marriage or family for the rest of us?

Why are we spending tax dollars or valuable time on this? Aren't you opposed to government meddling in private affairs? Isn't there a leaker we could catch? Or Osama? Or Saddam?

How about protecting the children who live with their married parents but still aren't in a safe and loving home due to abuse or neglect? Or how about protecting children who are in safe and loving -- but food-insecure and insuranceless -- homes?

:grr:

They're fishing for election year issues. There's no telling what sort of deranged rot will get traction. His pop sailed into office with issues that zilch to do with the presidency. Now Dub gets to finger-point at whichever of the 10 candidates voted for DOMA as once having the wisdom to agree with his stupid marriage iniative.

17. How about focusing on a Jobs Protection Week
every damn week! This, whatever he is, has some serioulsy messed up priorities. Oh he has a job, well atleast for alittle while longer, so who cares if 3 million+ Americans don't. Hey! Bush*, ever wonder what the loss of a job might do to a marriage, and by extention, to the family unit? Bet it never crossed your pea-sized brain. This isn't about protecting marriage so as too "ensure that every child can grow up in a safe and loving home." It's just more pandering on Bushs'* part. If Bush* really cared so much about children growing up in a "safe and loving home," he would make sure that their parents were able to afford/keep a home by making sure they had jobs. Oh but what am I saying, Bush* knows how hard it is to put food on your family. I am so sick of Bushs'* crap! :argh: How does referring to your other half as "the lump next to me in bed," promote a loving home? No wonder the Bush twins are so messed up. He should practice what he PREACHES. Also I am sick of being PREACHED too by a someone who was drunk and unemployed til the age of 40?

23. Absolutely true
Jobs protection week every week.

As a newly wed, I'm not getting why we need a week of protecting marriage? Isn't that the responsibility of the people who made a commitment to each other? Help me out here, I'm a neophite. I took vows to nurture and protect my marriage and to make the marriage my first priority. So why are we having a week long party? Why are our single friends excluded? Could we just have a protect our relationships week and includes everyone?

Hey where's my government manual on good American marriages? Where's the PSA from the 50's telling me about my role as wife? This is way out there. What exactly are we protecting marriages from?

This is more than right wing propaganda, it is from the scary religious right (I see a little bit of a difference but it becomes one in same a little bit more everyday under this administration)

I am happily married (only 8 years) but we would be alot happier if my husband could find a job! Without adequate INCOME, you cannot have a HOME...let alone a safe and loving one!!! All of this after what they did to Wilson's wife. That is great! That little leak of theirs could have caused a great deal of stress to that marriage! Thank God Wilson is a stand up guy! The antics of the administration grow more disgusting everyday!

end of rant

27. Protect marriage from what?! Same sex couples perhaps??
>>Marriage is a union between a man and a woman, and my Administration is working to support the institution of marriage by helping couples build successful marriages and be good parents.<< http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/10/20031003-12.html

Why don't we really throw back the clock and ban inter-racial marriage while we're at it -- can you believe some areas of this country used to ban inter-racial marriage?!! Ridiculous, isn't it? Is it only me who sees a parallel here?

Drawing upon the infallible logic of pResident whistle-ass...I ask you to consider this:

Imagine if you will, that we have a pResident who advocated that we deny marriage to all LEFT-HANDED people. Yep, if you're left-handed -- you must pay your taxes and follow the law -- but your relationships won't be recognized -- hell, they won't be allowed!

Poor left-handed people; you should come to Jesus and let him make you right-handed people. After all, you chose to be left-handed so face the consequences of your actions. Marriage is for right-handed people. Thank God we have Marriage Protection Week 2003. :puke:

Soon we will hear that real marraiges are only first marraiges, that second marraiges are not valid.

Yeah, if my partner and I move in next door to some nice Christian married couple, their marraige will immediately begin to crumble from the pressure.
