1. That is awesome!
I bet other communities voted AGAINST the GOP coup d'etat as well, but their votes did not register...

29. Faith and begorrah, Laddie...
'Tis Northern Cal that's taken the brrrrroooont of the hit to the state's economic downfall. (Er, don't take offense at the attempt at a brogue -- I served an 8-yr sentence with old-country nuns.)

Besides, if you come up here and actually find a graphic-design job that I didn't know about, I'd have to kill you.

Okay, okay, seriously now: If you come up here, I'll welcome you with open arms. We LOVE liberals up here. There just won't be any work for you. :(

10. Yeah, I live in Santa Cruz County
And we are so far coming out about 65-35.

Sometimes though I wish I lived somewhere where I could make more of a difference, we're mostly preaching to the choir here.

At least I don't have to deal with the gloating that Dems in Orange County will probably face. Ugh.

16. Thank you.
Checked my old county (where I cast a vote for Davis in '98) and found that the recall lost. Not the whole state (sadly), but at least where I used to live more than 58% of voters rejected the recall.

Not San Francisco - but in the Bay Area.

17. Take a look...
...at the map - http://vote2003.ss.ca.gov/Returns/recall/mapN4.htm - and you'll see why I'd like to carve out everything from Mendocino to Monterey, and set us adrift on our own little Liberal Island!

Even Santa Clara Co. did respectably (considering we're stuck with lots and lots of rich Repukes):

Shall Gray Davis be recalled?

Yes 66,752 41.9
No 92,397 58.1

Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 01:42 AM by 0rganism
And I gotta warn you, all the liberal counties are on the west side of the fault, and will head right on into the ocean, so you'll eventually get your wish.

edit: the blank spaces are Tulane and Alameda counties, with 0% reporting.

22. Yeah, we have to figure out
why people who live by the coast tend to be more liberal. Is it the cool ocean air that clears our heads?

By the way, I am proud to live right smack in one of those red counties. :)

28. I think it's just more people
More people are near the water (LA, SF, Seattle, New York, Miami, etc.) and I also contend that the majority of people are progressive and liberal.

30. I hate to give you bad dreams, Amv60, but...
...(put yer :tinfoilhat: on!)... ya think there's anything to it that SF Co. & Sta. Clara were hit hardest by the dot-com bust, and (hang on to that :tinfoilhat:!) Marin Co. still can't figure out why breast- and prostate-cancer rates are off the scale?

Oooooo-eeeeee-ooooo...

Okay, :tinfoilhat: off! So, Amv60, which of us red(blue) counties are you in (pardon the atrocious grammar)?

Where do you live?

I lived here when downtown was destroyed, was just telling someone the story the other day how I rode on the back of a friend's moped that day right after the quake, it was so quiet and scary.

But you can't keep downtown down. It's as weird as ever.

36. At the risk of going waaaaaaaaay off-topic...
I'm on the peninsula, between Stanford U. & Moffett Field, for lack of any other recognizable landmarks.

You're right -- there's something utterly indomitable about Santa Cruz. I say we move the capital to the basement of Logo Books & Records. Then this state would see some real progress!

38. Could be worse
There are some beautiful areas up around Stanford.

I love Logos. Between there and Streetlight Records, I could spend all day and a fortune.

Hey I don't know if you have a fave Dem candidate yet, but our local campaign just got John Laird to endorse Dean -- major coup, if you follow Santa Cruz area politics at all.

35. Bay Area Tallies (all counties voted 'No Recall')
Percent voting 'No' on the Recall:
Unfortunately, it was not enough. But I'm continually amazed at the voting in this area. Oh yeah, and pleased!

SF 80%
Marin 68%
Alameda 68%
Santa Cruz 65%
San Mateo 63%
Sonoma 60%
Santa Clara 58%
Contra Costa 57%
Napa 55%
Solano 51%

and for good measure:
Mendocino 58%
Humboldt 52%
Monterey 52%

What the...?:
LA 52% (I think the Arnold-mania was really strong in the Southland...LA's usually much more heavily Democratic)

No other counties in the state voted against the recall. Also, this is a somewhat similar pattern compared to the vote of Prop. 187 in 1994.
