Did Gov. Davis concede too early?

It looks like the initial results were skewed heavily in favor of recall. Gov. Davis conceded before 10:00PM PST, IIRC, and now the NO votes are creeping up. Alameda, for instance, just reported in with another staggering NO vote margin of 100000.

As the rest of the votes are totalled, this thing could certainly drift into contestable territory. Now it's 54% to 46%, instead of the 59-41 exit polls cited earlier.

Why couldn't Gov. Davis wait until TOMORROW, just in case it continues to get close? Now it's just fucking embarrassing.

4. Well, since the CA SoS website appears to be down, I can't agree

or disagree for that matter. I do remember someone from the Davis campaign saying that their internal polling was getting these results. Perhaps they had some pretty firm conditionals built up concerning turnout and demographics to tip the balance, and they weren't getting the numbers based on early sampling.

But still... Why not just kick back, get shitfaced if you must, and wait for the final numbers to roll in? Is it really that hard?

Maybe Gov. Davis just didn't want the job anymore. *shrug*

5. Only 10% of precincts remain...that's 695,000 votes

and Davis is down by what? 500K. I guess it's possible that it isn't over.

8. Yeah, I know what you mean, but still...

at the time he actually conceded, the race was still in the open field. He was behind, but... well, what if the unthinkable DOES happen? What if? What's he gonna do?

Keep his job and look like a wuss, that's what.

I hereby vow that if I ever run for public office, I will withhold my concession and victory speaches until at least the day after the vote itself.

11. It's mathematically over...

at this time, only 460,000 remain to be counted (assuming the amount of votes per precinct ratio remains the same) and NO is off by 600,000.

A degraded human, perhaps, but preferable to the strange distant untouchability he had before, which probably contributed to his unpopularity. And I got to see his wife, for once. She seemed real enough, likeable as you said.

Now I wonder what the re-recall will do for der gubernator's humanity -- if it gets off the ground.

13. If Grey had shown more humility earlier on, he might have kept his job

If he had shown he was sincerely interested in fixing the problems instead of firing back at Republicans and being in the 'campaign' mode, he might have survived. His defiance reminded me of Ceaucescuau's as he was facing the firing squad. Also, his last-minute legislation such as allowing illegals to get drivers' licenses almost certainly appeared to many Californians like pandering. He needed to act like he was immersed in solving California's buget problems instead of campaigning as if he were the challenger.
