California Joins Texas on My Avoid At All Costs List
Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 08:11 AM by bobd
I studiously avoid visting and buying things from states that openly flaunt bizarre, white male, racist, reactionary conservative views. I realize that the entire country more or less falls into this category but Texas (for obvious reasons) and now California tops the list.

The election of the pathetic clown to a such powerful postion more than qualifies California as a bad, bad place. How an overwhelming majority of theoretically rational human beings could collectively go so nuts is both breathtaking in its hubris and frightening in its implications.

1. Quick editing
I see you removed the paragraph that condemned the whole country.

Now, you're just condemning Texas & California. Why have you left Florida off your list?

Alas, not every place can be as perfect as that pinnacle of human tolerance, that acme of advanced culture, that veritable heaven on Earth--Toledo, Ohio!

2. Toledo is no Paradise
and yes I did remove the paragraph in question. I guess that indicates I'm not yet totally depraved.

As a matter of fact Florida moved to number 3.

As for Toledo ... Toledo is NOT a nice place to live and work. It routinely elects Dems but it's very conservative in its racism and funadamentalist religious views.

Also - I don't hold myself up as any kind of example to follow. I'm a depressive (long term despite meds) and a pessimist. I pretty much loath myself and occassionally feel the need to pollute these forums with my unwelcome and evil opinions.

It really is OK to ridicule and hate me. Hell, I'll agree with you 100%

6. Please! Toledo is not that bad!
You've got Marcy Kaptur for Rep for the Ninth District. The Mayor and City Council are predominately Democratic, or at least they used to be.

And you cannot beat the park system. I have lived in many places and the Toledo Metroparks are the BEST anywhere. They are free and clean and not crowded. The Toledo area also has the Maumee River. I am not talking about the area from Rossford down through the Port of Toledo, I am talking about up near Waterville. My husband and I kayak and canoe it all the time. There are several rapids to travel through, really near Side Cut they have to be at least a Class II when the water is up.

The area also has at least three good bike trails. One near UT, the other in Maumee, and one more in Whitehouse (which I have not investigated yet).

Toledo also has a world-class museum (I used to work there)and a wonderful Zoo (Have you ever gone to the free Sunday night concerts there?). I also enjoyed the fireworks on Labor Day.

In the Toledo area there are a lot of blue collar people with Jeep and Powertrain, but there are a lot of white collar types too. I haven't seen much religious fundamentalism there. There are bad apples everywhere but Toledo's charms have outweigh its negatives. I am thinking about moving back to the area from Detroit and my Michigan friends can't believe I would willingly move back. I tell them they have to see it to believe it. It is a nature lover's dream!

3. Don't know what you struck from your post, but...
I am tempted say that hubris is to believe that every place must be like every other place. Have you ever been to Austin? It's a cool town. San Francisco, too, if you haven't been there you should go sometimes. But what kind of person believes that every place should be like Austin, San Francisco, Ithaca New York, or Boston Mass? The U.S. just wouldn't be the same if it didn't also have Lubbock and Bakersfield. Melting pot, remember?

4. As I said before
My opinions are not good ones. They are mostly incorrect. I agree with you that I'm very hubristic in my views of various places. I'm not pround of it and I struggle with it a lot. Sometimes it slips out and I'm sorry for causing you to have to comment on it. :-(

5. you are right
It would be much better.

And it was not a majority of Californians who voted the Schiklegroper into office. It was a highly-motivated, well-financed repuke operation.

This is not to excuse the Dems who supported the recall. They deserve condemnation as well.

9. Austin Rocks !
Lot's of Dems here. Austin is the number one live music capitol of the world. Ever heard of South by Southwest ? Don't forget about Tex Mex food, margaritas, and the BEST barbecue in the US. Some examples are Pokey Joes, Coopers, Green Mesquite, County Line, and a whole bunch more. I will die here if it is my choice.
