Teacher, aide arrested after kids say they were taped to chairs

I wonder what my actions would be if my 6 year old came home and told me this happened to him:mad:

A Coral Gables Elementary School teacher and a volunteer aide were arrested this morning, following an investigation that several 6-year-old students were disciplined by taping them to chairs and the blackboard.

All had their ankles taped together, their arms taped to their lap or their heads taped to the blackboard, police said. One said her mouth was taped shut.

...is our teachers can't read and comprehend.

Tom Ridge said the tape was supposed to hold the plastic over the doorways and windows. He never said it was to hold the kids to the walls and furniture.

When I was in first grade, my teacher regularly taped kid's mouths shut. When I became a teacher, I never did such a thing. I also didn't want to spank kids, although it was allowed (I think I did it maybe three times during my entire 19-year career). I did isolate some kids from others, just so the class could study without disruption. I'm wondering just what those kids did to warrant taping. Sounds a bit strange.

If the kids were a major problem, then the parents should have been informed. I made it a habit to get to know the parents of my students in the week before school began. I'd call them up and then go by their houses for a chat. I found this very effective, because the kids knew I knew their folks and that we were all on the same team. Of course, if this school were in a tough crime area, this approach isn't going to work-parents in those areas are already stressed from the environment and often work long hours and don't have time to visit with teachers-a sad commentary on today's society, I know.
