Sad comment in my college paper from someone in the Army
Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 01:28 AM by anti_shrub
No, its not that astroturf letter going around.

My college paper has a section where they ask random people a question about world affairs, and admittedly since this is a Community College, sometimes the answers are a little less than stellar.

Still, this shocked and saddened me.

The question was "Do you think US taxpayers should pay the $87 billion needed to reconstruct Iraq?"

One reply was "Heck no! They started it (meaning 9/11). I'm in the Army and I wouldn't want to help those people (Iraqis)."

Silly me, I thought helping those people are what we were supposed to be doing over there.

1. Well,... this is America, sweetheart,
Folks have a right to their misbeliefs. We just need to keep the candles lit. Just make sure you have a ready supply of candles and
matches. I think we are all going to need them when the denial really sets in.

Just understand, these guys are always, will always, be with us. It's kind of like step, bump, drag...and repeat. It never has been really different from that. Just ask a smart philosophy or history professor.

:D

2. I know
But the amount of sheer ignorance in that statement literally left me speechless when I first read it.

I mean really, even if you let the Iraq=9/11 thing slide, just the thought that someone in the Army thinks we shouldn't help the Iraqi people is sickening.

4. Sort of a trick question, too, I guess.

I think out of that 87 billion, 20 billion was to be reserved for rebuilding Iraq.

I would hope that isn't a prevailing view, on average, of those on the Army.
