One-week RIAA boycott coming
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 09:50 PM by scottxyz
http://www.infoanarchy.org/story/2003/10/11/183834/35

An ad-hoc coalition of websites has created http://www.stopRIAAlawsuits.com which will call for a one week boycott of RIAA music beginning the day that the next round of filesharing lawsuits are filed.

As of today, over 45 sites have already signed on to the coalition. The boycott is an attempt to bring a halt to the record industry's filesharing lawsuits, which are pushing many families into bankruptcy.

To join, websites should send an email from their domain to: stopRIAAlawsuits@downhillbattle.org . You can read more about the coalition and see the list of sites that have already joined at http://www.stopRIAAlawsuits.com ...

1. Why only one week?
Keep it going until those bastards are eating out of dumpsters.

If someone wants t beat that tired "But you'll hurt the arrrrrrrtists" drum, I got a Cluestick Whack for you: The arrrrrrrtists have generally allowed the RIAA to pull their crap, with very little speaking out on their parts. Put a little pressure on the arrrrrrtists and they'll wake up. Presumably.

2. Keep the protest going.
Artists generally don't make a percentage of CD/record sales anyway. If they do its no more than 5% (that's if they are extremely luck). Most of their pocket cash comes from tours, which, if the music is more readily available, benefits the ARTIST MORE. Every musician should welcome file-sharing and free music swapping.

If an idiot like Fred Durst can figure this out, there is no reason for anyone else to not figure it out. There is no excuse for believing the "artist" is suffering line. It's complete Bull.

3. Here's what one artist (Courtney Love) thinks about the current setup
http://radio.weblogs.com/0100258/stories/2002/01/23/courtneyLoveLetter.html

Dear Fellow Recording Artists,

I'm writing to ask you to join the chorus of recording artists who want us all to get a fair deal from the record companies. R.E.M., the Dixie Chicks, U2, Alanis Morrissette, Bush, Prince and Q-Tip have called me with their support and we need your participation as well.

There are 3 basic facts to all recording artists should know:

1. No one has ever represented the rights and interests of recording artists AS A GROUP in negotiations with record companies

2. Recording artists don't have access to quality health care and pension plans like the ones made available to actors and athletes through their unions.

3. Recording artists are paid royalties that represent a tiny fraction of the money their work earns.

5. And the new pay-"Napster 2.0" is going to screw the artists too:
http://www.downhillbattle.org/napster/

"Now that we have to pay for Napster, it's not that cool anymore.
But now that I'm out of college, I'm not that cool anymore either."

"Napster is a great way to support record executives.
Those 7-figure salaries don't pay for themselves, you know."

"With Napster 2.0, I don't feel guilty when I download music.
Napster and the record labels handle the screw job for me."

People {are} might start paying for songs on the {iTunes Music Store} Napster because they think it's a good way to support musicians. But by giving musicians just a few cents from each sale, {iTunes}Napster destroys a huge opportunity. Instead of creating a system that gets virtually all of fans' money directly to artists-- finally possible with the internet-- {iTunes}Napster takes a big step backwards. {Apple}Roxio calls {iTunes}Napster "revolutionary" but really they're just letting record companies force the same exploitive and unfair business model onto a new medium. ...
