What ever happened to Elizabeth Smart?
Everyone's familiar with the story: Beautiful white girl gets kidnapped by Rasputin-like wacko, then rescued, followed by a media frenzy rivaling that of Gary Condit and shark attacks.

But lately ... nothing. So, whassup? It's not like the press to go radio-silent over a juicy story (to them) like this.

Me personally? I hope I do never have to hear about her and how she will be paraded in front of the media at the coming trial (?) ... but I'm curious how she's doing.

1. As you said...
Hopefully we won't hear anything else about her from the media and she'll be able to have a relatively normal life. I hope the prosecution cuts a deal to get the freak off the street so there won't be a trial.

4. They had something on her in People Magazine lately.
Sort of a fluff piece. It is said she is doing fine and playing her harp. She hopes to be able to attend Julliard one day. I was kinda taken aback though that she hasn't been encouraged to talk about her ordeal or get counseling.

7. Nonsense.
We should welcome rational discussion of this subject.

11. I see
So you enjoy seeing a young kidnap and rape victim exploited for the prurient entertainment of the masses? You're right, it is "nonsense".

8. OK, I have a question about exactly this issue
When it first hit the news, it just didn't 'feel' right. We had a long discussion about the circumstances and the televised interviews. People seemed inappropriately 'calm' at times, and the tome of the interviews struck me as a bit odd. We concluded that there was probably more to the story than what anyone was talking about. To me and my wife it seemed more like a runaway/adventure scenario, rather than a kidnapping. I won't go so far as to suggest that there may have been a publicity motive, so don't flame, just discuss the possibilities-please.

9. If you ever spent some time in Utah, it wouldn't seem that strange.
Mormons become guarded and secretive when strangers focus on them. All the normalcy and openess evident during the Olympics was staged.

10. Read Krakauer's new book, "Under the Banner of Heaven"
and you will come to understand a whole lot better why Elizabeth Smart stayed with her captor and didn't try to flee.

It has alot to do with the philosophy of being a Mormon.
