WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) dismissed as "nonsense" criticism from a former aide who accused him of misleading the American people by exaggerating the threat posed by Iraq (news - web sites).

Powell said the criticism -- from Greg Thielmann, a State Department weapons analyst who resigned last year -- was the opinion of just one person and did not reflect the overall judgement of various US intelligence agencies.

"That's nonsense," Powell said of Thielmann, who told CBS television that the secretary had overstated Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s weapons of mass destruction capabilities when he made the US case for war against Iraq before the UN Security Council in February.

"I presented, on the 5th of February, not something I pulled out of the air," Powell said in an interview with the BBC. "I presented the considered judgment of the intelligence community, the coordinated judgment of the intelligence community of the United States of America.

Sorry Colin, nice try, but it wasn't "an" individual. If I recollect correctly there were 3 inidividuals who were interviewed on camera and who all agreed with what Thielmann was saying. One of these individuals was one of the foremost experts in uranim processing and enrichment in the USA (I think he was from Lawrence Livermore) who said that there was absolutely no way that the much ballyhood aluminum tubes could have been used in centrifuges to enrich uranium and he did not know one other expert in the field either in the US or overseas who thought they could. He also made this opinion known prior to Colon's UN speech.
